The population as shown by the census returns indicate that there were in 1850, 502: 1855, 2,278; 1860. 3,965: 1865, 5.722; 1870 123 035: 1875, 15, 782: 1880, 22, 699; in June, 1$85, 35,500, and to day we claim as shown by the enumeration January 1st, 1888 it has 51b 350 and the next census will undoubtedly show our population to b; between (75,000 and.100,000. Thus the growth has been very |satie factory, while business blocks fand residences have sprung up of every hand as if by magic, and it is doubtful if any city of the same population anywhere cad present such an array of figures as those denoting the growth of Des Moines.
