The question of cheaper transportation jis nov, engrossing the- minds of our citizens, and the people throughout the State, and wd fexpect from theiagitation of the question, better mates. | A largely flint cased volume of traffic, and the construction of lines into our city from different directions, produces competition, which, In our opinion. is the most successful agency in alljusting the differences which arise. and in securing lower and equitable bases of rates!

Commercial and Manufacturing Interests.

What is most desirel just at present by our wholesale merchants and! manufacturers, is a little better rates, which we have reason to believe they will soon receive, and which will enable them to compete more successhitlly with Chicago and other cities. Situated as we are. Between the commercial centers of the east and the markets of .the szent Northwest, ye are brought into. direct competition, and it is not foibe wondered at that we should ibo looked upon with jealousy as; a fisipg commercialicenter |by those cities which realize that ere long the frades they now inse may be diverted from thein to Des Moines, when fre gecure such rates: as will ppable our merchants and manufacturers for liandle the goods at the same prices. Everything is most encour- ging that Des Moines will maintain her reputation as the best trading joint west of Chicago! ! - The questions which present themselves to the wide awake ?busi- ness man are. what are the facilities for securing the raw material and for shipping the manufactured product and what is the extent of ter- fitory tributary froin which trade naturally comes ??
