At the first call of the government men began to leave Marshall county for service. Until the draft went into effect the boys left singly or in small groups. The citizens of the county began to realize the boys were going to war and no public form of appreciation was being shown. A fund was raised to give the boys a banquet, but for many valid reasons this was found to be impracticable. A special committee was named to care for this matter. After considering many proposals it was decided to give each man going from the county something that could be secured only by real service. A suitable bronze medal, inscribed with the own- er's name, together with a wrist watch, was given each man. This practice continued until the watches proved to be unfit and not worth the cost. The committee then decided to se- cure a medal which would cost the same amount as the former medal and watch. This was done and the cut of the medal is shown above. The purpose of the committee was to give each soldier and sailor in Marshall county this token of appreciation. Medals were given the Red Cross nurses as well.

In order to finance this movement funds were raised by the merchants, and employes of factories and the stores, and the towns of the county also sent in funds. The commit- tee listed below had charge of all demonstrations made for the men on leaving:

General committee: R. W. McCreery, chairman; J. B. Northcott, secretary-treasurer; E. A. Franquemont, A. W. Carlson, E. R. Lay, E. H. Draper, B. C. Whitehill, W. C. McCar- ten and Frank Ryder.

Committee on speakers: C. C. St. Clair, chairman; A. F. Balch and B. F. Cummings. Committee on parades: B. C. Whitehill, chairman; F. M. Wilbur, A. W. Carlson and A. Palmer.

Committee to secure names of soldiers: H. J. Rodgers, chairman; Leroy Jones, E. A. Franquemont.

Committee on medals: E. H. Draper, chairman; J. Sidney Johnson and J. B. Northcott.

Committee on publicity: H. J. Rodgers, chairman; J. Sidney Johnson and J. B. Northcott.
