Upon our declaration of war, the Kaiser of Germany, fearing that the United States would destroy, by means of this war, the last bit of monarchism in North America and thus weaken monarchism the world over, seconded by France, urged England to join them in put- ting their fleets between America and the Spanish fleet. England declined to have anything to do with such an outrageous plan. So the Kaiser decided he would act without her aid, but he reckoned without his host. When his battleships arrived in Manila Bay, they found several battleships of the British navy there for the purpose of seeing that Uncle Sam received fair play.
By reviewing American history we can readily see that although the United States is indebted to France for aid rendered in helping her establish herself as a nation, she owes Great Britain the far greater debt of aiding her not once but many times, to remain a nation.
The British commonwealth and the American nation are in reality sister powers. the people of both are Anglo-Saxons, they speak the same language. admire the same literature, and have similar religions and governments. For although England is not a Democracy she is the most democratic nation in existence. As a result of these things we are now allied with Britain against one of the greatest perils the world has ever known-world autocracy.
We are an ally of both England and France, the two great factors in our growth as a nation. We are arrayed against a common enemy for a common cause, and by helping our helpers. by means of ships. troops, food and munitions of war, we will not only cancel every debt we ever owed either country. but will in all probability greatly overpay it in a material sense. But if we overpay it a thousand fold we are not fighting for England. France, or ourselves alone-we are fighting for the world and humanity.
