HISTORY

of

The Fourth Illinois Cavalry Regiment

By P. O. AVERY, of Company I, Fourth Illinois.

HUMBOLDT, NEBRASKA. THE ENTERPRISE: A PRINT SHOP -1903-

PREFACE.

A work of this kind, written forty years after the events to be recorded transpired, and the most of the officers engaged therein being dead, none of whom seems to have kept any record, is more or less incomplete. The writer of this history has used his best endeavor to procure truthful accounts of deeds preformed and incidents of the bivouac and scout as well as the more serious work of an armed conflict with the enemy.

A few years ago at a reunion of the Fourth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Cavalry there was one comrade detailed from each company to write a history of his company, the intention being to compile a history of the regiment out of these several company histories, but so far as I know I am the only one that responded with anything that could be called a history of his company.

Having kept a diary wbile in the army I had some data to go by and with the aid of the Adjutant General's report from which I procured the roster, I wrote as complete a history of Company I as I could with the material at hand.

Time rolled on and the history of our regiment not writ-

ten and every year our numbers were growing less and the chances more remote that there would be a history of the grand old Fourth Illinois Cavalry Regiment published.

Therefore, after consulting with a few of our comrades, all of whom, I think, approved of my plan, I proceeded to take the history of Company I that I had written, by making a few alterations and additions, as a basis and insert into it reports of officers that commanded enterprises of which we composed all or a part of the force engaged, as they were found in the rebellion records.

This work has been completed as it is with no small amount of labor and expense, with practically no help excepting what comrade J. B. Cook has contributed, and with no help financially.

There would have been more pictures of officers of the regiment in this book if they could have been procured in time. I sincerely hope that my comrades will appreciate this effort and firmly believe they will scan its pages with absorbing interest.

FOURTH ILLINOIS CAVALRY REGIMENT.

THREE YEAR'S SERVICE.

In August, 1861, Judge T. Lyle Dickey, of Ottawa, LaSalle county, Ill., was authorized by the Secretary of War, to raise and organize a regiment of cavalry and the organization went upon the records as the 4th Illinois cavalry.

On the 26th day of September, 1861, the regiment was mustered into the United States Military service and on November 4th, took its line of march for Springfield, where it received its arms, which were not removed from their cases, however, until the command arrived at Cairo.

The regiment left Ottawa with 1050 enlisted men and 46 officers. Three years later, when we returned to Spring- field to be mustered out, we had 340 men, exclusive of 116 that re-enlisted and a few that received commissions in colored regiments.

Following is the roster of the regiment, including field and staff:
