PREFACE.

To the citizens of Champaign and Urbana:

We take pleasure in presenting this, our first Directory of your beautiful cities. We have endeavored to make as complete and correct a book as can be done in this kind of work. We leave it to your kind consideration, trusting that an appreciative view may be taken of our work.

In our canvass we endeavored to take a correct census of the two cities, and think that we are not far from the figures when we say that in round numbers Champaign has 8,300 and Urbana 4,500, making a total population of 12,800 for the two cities. According to the last census of Champaign and Urbana, the per cent of gain has been much greater in Urbana than in Cham- paign, which must be very gratifying to Urbana citizens.

Thanking those who have so willingly and liberally patron- ized us, and by encouraging and helpful acts aided us, we will close with a wish for unbounded prosperity to them.

We remain, very respectfully,

T. D. CAIRNS & CO.,
