Preface.
1895-96.
Directory Publishers, like all the rest of the world, are .ly influenced by selfish considerations. They do not se- PI 0 heir field of operations at hap-hazard and trust blindly kind Providence to see them successfully through their rtaking ; nor do they allow any sentimental considera- »,I to warp their judgment and draw them to barren fields. With their long years of experience in different cities and las of operations, they acquire the faculty of correctly esti- a ing the present status and future prospects of a city and ›vern themselves accordingly.
The publishers of this volume recognize the fact that it es not mean simply the compiling and issuing of a book, on a farewell flight to other pastures, but it means the ex- diture of thousands of dollars in time and labor and ex- se for all the years to come, as each successive volume is ed. This being the case, the question of choice of cities the scene of their labors becomes an all-important one, as nistake in estimating the prospects for the future growth heir chosen city would be costly indeed.
In issuing their first volume of what they expect to be ng series of valuable volumes, the publishers wish to say t every day of their stay has made them prouder of their nection with such a city, and they shall do all in their wer to be of use in her future career. To this end they have ed all the care that long years of experience could suggest ) make the book complete and reliable, since no one better .nows how worse than useless is an unreliable Directory. The idea that a single canvass of a city is all that is required, is far short of the truth. Every street and alley and house must be gone over and over again, to trace up and confirm every name, as well as to get changes and removals, either actual or in contemplation. The publishers are here to stay

by the city, and fully understanding that their future success depends largely upon how accurate they get their books, therefore they have spared no time nor expense to make it as accurate and complete as possible.
An exhaustive canvass has been made of the cities of Champaign and Urbana and a careful census taken, and we find that Champaign on July 8, 1895, has a population of 9,273, while that of Urbana on July 15 was 5,369. These figures are from actual count and are reliable. With the already large manufacturing interests established in Cham- paign and Urbana, and the constant advent of new business enterprises, we bespeak for these two cities a healthy and prosperous growth, and believe that within the next few years they will double their present population.
In conclusion we desire to thank our many patrons for the very liberal support they have given us, and trust that the result of out efforts will meet with their approval and appre- ciation. Regardless of a restless and growing community, we have used every precaution to issue a valuable and com- plete work.
Very Respectfully,
HARDIE & SCHARLE.
