INTRODUCTORY

The publishers have taken the greatest care to make this-the 1918 Champaign-Urbana City Directory-a standard book of reference, of particular use and interest to the public in general.

You will notice the indexing, different grouping and classification of the Miscellaneous Directory, a new section devoted to the University of Illinois and the marking of intersections in the Street Directory.

These additional features are embodied in this issue to make the information more accessible and a true guide to the cities, their people, government, organizations and societies.

War conditions have altered, somewhat, the factors that govern the development of Champaign and Urbana, yet an actual count reveals a population of 28,816, which is a gain of over 30% since the Government census of 1910. 3687 of these are students registered at the University of Illinois [The normal enrollment at Urbana is more than 5600.]

The unusually large proportion of beautiful residences in the Twin Cities, probably indicates the character, strength and stability of the community, better than any other one thing.

This fact, together with the transportation facilities, superior edu- cational and other advantages should be a deciding factor for the home- seeker, the investor and industries considering a location.

The presentation of this work affords the publishers a great deal of pleasure and we wish to express our appreciation of the assistance given in its preparation and especially our patrons, whose hearty support has made the undertaking possible.

We are also confident this issue will prove satisfactory and open the way for issues to come.

Respectfully.
