FOREWORD
Piatt County was formed in 1841 from parts of Macon and Dewitt Counties, because the early settlers felt that they were too far from a county seat. Monticello was chosen to be the county seat of the new county.
The Sangamon River flows through the county, and attracted the early settlers. They began to come in 1822 when George Hayworth came with a group of Quakers. As more came, different localities began to be populated. Many families came to stay only a few years, before continuing west to new country.
The early marriages have been copied as they are given in the Record Book. Any variations in spelling are due to the original records.
Tombstone inscriptions were recorded from those cemeteries which are in the oldest settled part of the county, all of them being in rural sections, except the Old Monticello Cemetery. The cemeteries have been neglected and many stones have been broken. Some have been reset, and in so doing, parts of the inscriptions become buried. When only one date is given along with the name, it is all available, for all dates were copied.
One Revolutionary Soldier, Lt. Samuel Olney, R. I. Militia, is buried in the Piatt Cemetery.

Ater Cemetery is in Sec. 19, T18 R5E, in Willow Branch Township, south of Route 47, about two miles east of Cisco. It is on a hill back from the road, and has not been used for some time. Many stones must have disappeared, for there seems to be much vacant space. The stone marking the earliest burial is that of Nancy, wife of Willis Ater, in 1848.
Camp Creek Cemetery is in Sangamon Township, in Sec. 34 T19 R6E, about a mile south of the village of White Heath. It is in the edge of the timber along the Camp Creek, well kept, and clean, for it is still used. It was evidently opened about 1850.
The Ingrum Cemetery is the largest one recorded in this volume. It also is in Sangamon Township, and was first known as the Cline Burying Ground. It is in Sec. 14 T19 R6E, one and a half miles north of White Heath, on a low hill. It is still used, and is well kept. Many family plots contain several generations. The oldest marker is that for Jeremiah Elsea, who was buried in July 1838.
Mackey Cemetery is also in Sangamon Township, in Sec. 3 T19 R6E, on a hill back from the road, two and a half miles south of Mansfield. It is still used and well kept.
The Madden Cemetery is on a hill at the edge of the timber near the Sangamon River, just south of Route 10, in Sec. 16 T 19 R6E. It is not used, and in poor condition. The first marked burial is that of a Madden infant in January 1842.
Marain Cemetery is in Goose Creek Township, southeast of Cisco, in Sec. 27 T19 R5E, near the timber. There was a Methodist Church there, but it has been gone for a long time. The church building was also used as a school, and a town hall. There must have been many more burials than the present stones show, but it has not been used for a long time, and is in poor condition. The earliest burial, according to present stones, is that of Jonathan Marain, in April 1847.
The Old Monticello Cemetery is in the middle of town, and now a part of a city park. It is unfortunate that it has been neglected for so long, for many stones which are still there, have been broken, and there must have been many more which have disappeared. It is in the earliest settled part of the county, and many pioneer families are represented among the names still legible. The earliest burial date found, is that of Jamima Piatt, wife of James A. Piatt. She died March 16, 1836.
The Mosgrove Cemetery is a small abandoned family plot along the highway, Route 47, a few miles north of Monticello, in the edge of the woods.
14
The Piatt Cemetery is in Goose Creek Township, in Sec. 35 T19 R5E, in the timber, and back from the road. It is not well kept, but has the distinction of having the only Revolutionary Soldier buried in Piatt Co. He was Lt. Samuel Olney of the Rhode Island Militia, one of the very early settlers of the county. At first it was known as Hickory Point.
The Pioneer Cemetery is in two small plots on the land which now belongs to the University of Illinois, known as the Allerton Estate. There are only a few stones in each plot, and quite neglected. Most of the burials were made in the 1840's and 1850's.
Ross Cemetery is a small one, abandoned, in Sec. 21 T19 R6E, just north of Route 47, west of White Heath. The earliest burial recorded there, is that of Rachel Hughes, which is dated March 16, 1839.
The Stewart Cemetery is a small abandoned family plot amongst some trees in Sec. 1 T19 R6E, almost directly north of White Heath. Earliest burial date is that of Allen Stewart, -of August 7, 1839. The Stewart family was one of the earliest to settle here ..
Willow Branch is in the township of the same name, and is still used, and well kept. It must have been opened as early as any others in the county, for the earliest burial date is that for Abraham Ater, with date of August 25, 1839. It is in Sec. 33 T18 R5E, on a hill. There was a church there for a long time, but it has been gone for many years.
