ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FOURTH REGIMENT, I.V.I.


The One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Illnols Voinntcer Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illluols. in September, 1862, by Col. Thomas J. Sloan, and was mustered Sept, 10, by Llent. D. F. Cowreey; moved from Camp Butler Oct. 6, arriving at Jackson, Tennessee, on the 9th; was assigned to the 3d Brigade, 1st Division. 13th Army Corps. Moved to Lagrange Nov. 4. On the 28th drove the enemy across the Tallahatchle and advanced to Yocona River. The Regiment was lu 1st Brigade 3d Division, Brig. Gen. John A. Logan, command- Ing, and 17th Army Corps, Major Gen. James B. MePherson commandlug. On Dec. 24, arrived at Tallahatchle River, and Jaunary 7, 1863, at Lagrange. Brigadier General JJ. N. Hanle took command of the brigade on the 23d of February, 1863; moved down the river from Memphils to Lake Providence on March 15. Colonel Sloan took command of the brigade on the 17th; went Into camp at Berry's Landing, April 18; moved to Alllllken's Bend on the 25th; commenced the campaign against Vleksburg on the 30th; crossed the river, sixty inlles be- low Vleksburg, and May 1st was engaged at Thomson's Hill .. The 124th was engaged In the battles of Ray- mond, May 12th; at Jackson, 14th; at Champlon Ilills 16th, and during the entire siege of Vicksburg, lucind- Ing the charge on the fortihcatlons May 22d, and assanit on Fort Ilill Jnue 26th. During the latter part of the siege Brigadier General M. D. Leggett commanded the brigade; on the Bist of Angust, went ou campalgu to Monroe, Loulslana, Brigadier General John D. Stephenson commanding: Oct. 14th, on McPherson's campaign to Brownsville, aud was in battle at that place, Oct. 16th and 17th; on Nov. 7. moved camp to Black River; on the 25th of November the reglineuts of the 1st brigade, vlz. : 20th, 29th. 31st, 45th, and 124th Hillnols, and 23d ludlana, engaged in a prize drill, the 31st excelling In drill, and the i24th iu picket duty, etc. But at a subse- quent contest for a prize banner, offered by Brigadier General Leggett, commanding the division, the 124th received the banner. inscribed. "Excelsior Regiment, 3d Division, Ith Army Corps, " from the hands of Major General MePherson, for excelling lu soldlerly appearance, discipllue and drill. On Feb. 3. 1864. commenced the raid to Meridian; ou the 14th, had a severe skIrmlsh with the enemy at Chunky Station; returned to Vicks- burg March 4. On May 4, under Brigadier General McArthur, moved towards Benton and Yazoo City; was engaged at Benton on the 7th and 10th, and returned on the 21st. From July 1 to 9. the regiment moved with General Slocum ou hils Jackson campaign, and was engaged In the sharp fights at Jackson Cross Roads, July 5 and 7. From Oct. 14 to 26, was in campalgu to White River and Memphis. Remalned at Vicksburg on provost duty nutil Feb. 25, 1865. when the regiment moved to New Orleans and was assigned to 3d Brigade, Col. James A. Gedals, 8th fowa, commandlug, 3d DIvislou, Brigadier General E. A. Carr commanding, and the 16th Corps, Major General A. J. Smith commanding. On March 12, embarked for Mobile; moved to Dauphine island and np Fish River, and commenced siege of Spanish Fort March 29. The regiment was the extreme left of the Investing line, and with one-haif deployed as skirnilshers, drove the enemy within thelr fortihcations. Tho brigade consisted of the 8th Iowa, 81st, 108th, and 124th Illinois; was engaged until the surrender of the fort. On the 13th of April, started for Montgomery; ou July 17, 1865, started home for muster out. Arrived at ('hleago, 111., Angust 3, and was mustered out Aug. 15, 1865, by Capt. George W. IJill, U.S.A.
