OUR LADIES' AID SOCIETY

The origin of this society seems to be shrouded in mystery. Nothing whatever is known concerning it, as no written records were kept, but it is reasonable to suppose that as soon as the church was organized some form of a woman's society was started. The following ladies have served as president :

Mrs. C. B. Johnston. 1890-1895

Mrs. Adam Haig 1895-1905

Mrs. F. A. Ehringer 1905-1908

Mrs. George Garrison.

1908-1910

Mrs. Gilbert Combes.

1910-1912

Mrs. F. A. Ehringer 1912

Since 1900 it has contributed about $1,500 for church and parsonage improvements. Of this sum, $616.00 was paid for the erection of the present church.

"BETHEL" CHURCH OF LOWPOINT.

The transaction which gave to Methodism the prop- erty above named occurred in 1851. The deed trans- fers a certain lot of land from Conrad H. Tool and wife "to the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church and their assigns forever." Isaac Boys was one of the original trustees.

In the summer of that year the church was built. This old meeting house for a long time previous to its connection with Washburn, was used by the Methodists in their work of salvation. There is no record extant which will give the data of these first years, so full of hope and promise.

However, we know that the "Circuit Riders" visited in regular order, month by month, and were enter- tained in the homes of the Fosters and the Clarks. There were two local preachers living in the vicinity, Jeter Foster, the grandfather of Brother Henry Fos- ter, and Wesley Akers, both of whom did good service among the neighborhood folk.

In 1875 Lowpoint became an out-appointment of Washburn, and together they make "Washburn charge."

Several good revivals have been held since 1875, and many accessions to the church are reported.

November 19, 1911, the Lowpoint Local Union Church came into being. A weekly service is held

15

by the pastor of Washburn church, but purely as a UNION service. This plan was rendered imperative by the varied denominations represented in the village. The Sunday School has been for many years superin- tended by Mrs. R. E. Hood. Though not a member of the church, Mr. Clark has been active in the official life of the society many years. At 73 years of age, he was the oldest resi- dent friend of the G. M. CLARK 1841-1914. church. He was killed by a train April 20, 1914.
