1 Chatham MSS., Public Record Office, Bundle 95. This appears in the Chatham Papers and is apparently a piece of intelligence of about the year 1752 which had found its way into the hands of William Pitt. The English copy apparently leaves something to be desired.

INTRODUCTION
NOTES ON 1818 CENSUS
An abstract of the census for 1818 is given in Buck, Illinois in 1818, pp. 318-319, but as those figures do not in all cases agree with the ones found in rechecking the schedules, they are ignored here. The differences are minor. Most of the census commissioners made mistakes in footing the columns so only the totals have been listed in printing the schedules. The figures for the report of the secretary of the territory are copied here from Mr. Buck's list. The "Report to the Con- vention" is taken from the Journal of the Constitutional Con- vention reprinted in the Illinois State Historical Society, Journal, 6: 359.
Edwards County. No returns for 1818 are extant except that the supplementary census for Washington County con- tains also that "from the detached parts of Edwards Co. on the maridian line joining Washington."
Madison County. At the end of the enumeration of fam- ilies the census commissioner adds a note to the effect that there are 980 souls at Forts Crawford, Armstrong, Edwards and Clark. As this is obviously an estimate, if not frankly padding, this figure 980 has not been added in, though included in the secretary's report. Fort Crawford was located at the mouth of the Wisconsin River, north of the Illinois boundary as set by the enabling act.
Pope County. Sixty-four "blacks" are added to the total without indication of family connections or status as slave or free.
Randolph County. Only the "additional census" sched- ules are extant.
St. Clair County. The manuscript for this county has been partly destroyed by fire. The names beginning with A to E and part of those beginning with F are entirely missing ; also about thirty-one names and many figures from the bot- toms of the pages as indicated. The total of the extant figures in the first four columns is 3196, and of the extant figures in the "totals" column, 3110. The figures for St. Clair County are in italics to indicate that they are incomplete.

1 The recapitulation of the federal and state censuses of 1820 is included in this volume for purposes of comparison.
2 This number is an estimate only. A part of the Jackson County enumer- ation included a column of free white males 16-26. In this case the arbi- trary assumption was made that the number of persons above and under 21 was equal, and the totai was divided by two to arrive at those persons included over 21.

1The number of foreigners not naturalized probably should be 2 instead of 387. The census taker inser foreigners would be more in line with average for the rest of the state.
"Total should be 231.

1 The portion of the 1810 census here reproduced (see ante, X) seems to be for Randolph County alone. Numbers in brackets preceding names have been added for purpose of indexing. Figures in the tables that were corrected, according 2 to a transcript in the Illinois Historical Survey, either by erasure or writing over, are reproduced thus: - 1 has been rubbed out and 2 written over it. Cancelled figure alone means that number was rubbed out and nothing added. Cor- rected letters in names are similarly treated.
