Mr. Champaign is prominent in Odd Fellow work and is also a member of the canton of that order. He is a man of family.
WILLIAM F. BRIDGE
When a youth down in Carroll County, Indiana, William F. Bridge early manifested an early predilection for mathe- matics, and thought and dreamed of surveyor's links and chains. His taste for mathematics was given full vent and a course in civil engineering rounded out his education.
In the year 1886 Mr. Bridge went to Colorado. He was then twenty-two years of age, having been born in Delphi, Ind., April 11, 1864. He remained in Colorado four years, during which time he was elected to the office of Connty Surveyor of Baca County. He was the first elected County Surveyor of that county.
In 1890 he was drawn to Hammond by the great boom which the city had that year. For the first three years of his residence there Mr. Bridge was engaged in private engineering work. In 1893, though himself a Republican, a Democratic council appointed him City Civil Engineer, which position he has held continuously since that time. Miles upon miles of sewer and street improvements have been planned and carefully superintended by him. In fact there is scarcely a substantial public improvement with the success of which Mr. Bridge has not been identified.
Mr. Bridge is married, and has a wife and one son. He is prominent in Masonic and Pythian circles.

HON. THOMAS J. WOOD
No citizen of Crown Point stands higher in the estimation of his neighbors than the Hon. Thomas J. Wood, who has had conferred upon him, for many years past, material comforts, political honors and public esteem:
Born in Ohio, Mr. Wood removed with his parents to Indiana when he was nine years of age, and remained upon his father's farm in Vigo County until his nineteenth year, when his ability as a teacher became manifest. Alternately teaching and studying, Mr. Wood's mind attained growth and development, and after eight terms

of teaching in the public schools of Vigo County, Indiana, he entered the law office of the Hon. William Mack, afterward Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mr. Wood read law for two years under this eminent tutelage and entered the law department of the University of Michigan, from which he graduated with first honors in 1867. Realizing the advantages of the county capital for a location, he moved to Crown Point and formed a law partnership with Timothy Cleveland, and afterwards with his uncle, Hon. Martin Wood. This firm for many years continued as a strong legal firm in Indiana.
Mr. Wood served two terms as Town Treasurer of Crown Point. He has been twice prosecuting attorney of the Thirty-first District; in 1878 he was elected State Senator from Lake and Porter counties by a most remark- able plurality, and in 1882 he reached the climax of political preferment by being elected to Congress, where he served with honor and marked ability. Since leaving Congress Mr. Wood has devoted his entire attention to a large and lucrative practice given him by all classes of clients. His library is one of the finest and most com- plete collections of legal works to be found in any private collectiont As a lawyer Thomas J. Wood possesses the power to reason well and comprehend the scope of the most intricate case; as a speaker he is vigorous and logical; and in ornate diction and well.rounded periods sets forth the propositions upon which he relies. Exceed- ingly prominent in political, religious and fraternity circles, esteemed by all men for his sterling characteristics of heart and mind, successful in professional and business activities, Mr. Wood has always been courteous and affable, not only to friends and clients, but also to the humblest citizen, and has always found time and created opportunity to interest himself in all the affairs that affect the general welfare of his home county and district, and

JACOB M. HARTMAN
Jacob M. Hartman was born in St. John's Township, Lake County, Ind., December 7, 1859. He begun life as a farmer, but in 1886 moved to Hammond and engaged in business. This he continued until 1890, when, in an effort to give the city better police protection, he was added to the police force. From the start he has been acknowledged as the best officer on the force, a reputation he still deservedly bears. During the summer of 1897 it was sought to further add to the efficiency of the force by appointing a night captain. This place, without quib- bling or dissent, was given to Mr. Hartman, and he is greatly improving the night police service of the city.

In October, 1895, there was created the new position of assistant chief of the fire department, a place he still holds with credit to himself and to the department.

AUGUST CONRAD
What can be considered more delightful after a long day's drive, tired, perhaps, wet and hungry, than to be ushered into a cozy, well-lighted parlor or sitting room, in a well-ordered and well-appointed hotel, where all the comforts of life for man and beast are to be found and served with a bounteous, cheerful hand. Such an hostelry is the one presided over by August Conrad at Tolleston, Lake County. Mr. Conrad is one of those splendid types of hospitable Germans whom it is a pleasure to meet. Born in Germany in 1841, he emigrated to this country in 1866, locating in Chicago, where he followed the carpenter trade till 1870, when he moved to Clark Station, this county. Eight years following, or in 1878, he moved to Tolleston and opened the hotel and saloon where he still resides. In 1892 he was elected Trustee of Calumet Township, and was afterward appointed to fill the unex- pired term made vacant by the death of Henry F. Seegers. Mr. Conrad is a widower, having lost his estimable wife last October, but he still has four lovely children, two boys and two girls, left to console him for the loss of wife and mother.

JACOB HOUK
In 1890, by the resignation of Geo. M. Eder, there arose a vacancy in the office of Trustee of Center Town- ship. To this position Jacob Houk was appointed. He was elected to succeed himself in this position and in 1894 re-elected. His administration of the duties of this office has been marked by conservative business methods. The schools of the township have been kept at a high standard and public improvements have received the most careful attention.
Jacob Houk was born in Germany, August 21, 1842. When seventeen years of age he came to America, locating in Pennsylvania. After spending seven years in that State, he moved to Crown Point and embarked in the shoe business there in the spring of 1865. Mr. Houk is justly entitled to the title of the pioneer business man of Crown Point. He is a man of family.
J. B. WOODS
was born July 20, 1856, on a farm five miles east of Union City, Dark County, Ohio, his father, James Woods, being one of a large family of pioneers in that section.
The subject of this sketch was an orphan at ten, and at once removed to Randolph County, Indiana, where, on a farm near Huntsville, he worked and went to school. Being thrown upon his own resources, he began teaching at seventeen and worked his way through school. He attended both the Northern and Southern Indiana Normal schools, where he finished the business and teachers' courses. He taught several years, but did not like the work and in 1886 came to Hammond and accepted a position with the G. H. Hammond Co.

Mrs. Scheunemann's Tolleston store contains a gen- eral merchandise stock, consisting of dry goods, boots, shoes, coal, wood and various other lines.
JOHN W. SHONE
Among the many contributions of the mother country to the ranks of live, energetic business men none can be found more acceptable to the citizens of Whiting than John W. Shone, the subject of this sketch. Born in Stachshire, England, October 29, 1855, he moved with his parents to Whitehaven in Cumberland, where his early life was spent in the usual way of the youth of that rugged country. In 1882 Mr. Shone concluded to cast his fortunes with Uncle Sam. He worked as a laborer in different parts of the country, principally in the iron industries. In 1887 he moved to East Chicago, in this county, where he became a leader among his fellow workmen. The following year the bustling activity of Whiting attracted his attention and he saw an opportunity for bettering his condition in life.

These establishments are of modern design and equipped with every variety of machinery, manned by experienced operatives, to facilitate their steadily growing business. Their output consists of dressed beef, pork, veal and mutton, together with a full line of canned meats, beef extract and butterine. The business of this mammoth concern was established in 1869 by Geo. H. Hammond, at the time when the packing industry gave promise of a great future. Like many similar enterprises, its beginning was small, but it grew steadily until January, 1890, when the Company was re-incorporated under its present name, and its busi- ness to-day is world-wide in its scope.
The plant of this concern covers forty acres, of which twenty-five acres are covered with substantial buildings constructed on modern principles and arranged with a view of reducing the handling of their vast product to a minimum.
