DRILL UNDER SAIL. "UP MASTS!"

The cutters are each fitted with two masts and accompanying sails, the masts may be unshipped and the boat converted at will into sail boat or row boat. At the command "up masts!" the crews raise and step the masts, make fast the shrouds, hoist the top masts and with startling rapidity send their ten oared boats of a few minutes before, scudding before the breeze under an impressive array of bellying canvas.

GUN POINTING

This spiendid piece of ordnance has been issued to the Navai Battalion at Cuiver by the U. S. Navy Department. This picture was taken immediately after the gun had been mounted and before sheiter had been erected over it. The Department has aiso provided Morris tube equipment, which is a special device in which .22 caliber bullets are fired at a small target reduced to such proportion as to represent a large target at long range with the motion that would be given to it by the tossing of the waves. This gives practicaily the same gun-pointing drill that would be gone through with in gun practice at sea with actual firing at a moving target. This gun is of the latest design with telescopic sights and electricai firing apparatus.

THE FLAG BOAT

From this boat the Instructor gives his commands to the fleet of cutters or power boats by certain combinations of colored flags which are holsted, as shown in the picture. In response to these signals the boats are maneuvered in line and column as in the case of large ships. Corrections and cautions are

signalled by hand semaphore. The cadet in the bow was in the act of sending such a message when the picture was snapped. The boat drills conducted on this plan cultivate alertness and good judgment, and prove highly interesting.

BATTALION DRILL

While the greater part of the time available for drills is spent on the water, the cadets are given a short drill each day in the manual of arms and the school of the company and battalion. These drills are of considerable value in cultivating precision and attention to details.

GARRISON REVIEW IN WINTER.

C ATALOGUE of the Culver Military Academy, in session from September to June, will be sent on request to those interested. While Culver is very widely and favorably known, few people who have not visited the school fully realize that Culver Military Academy has an equipment which in many respects is absolutely unique, and that its advanced methods in the all around training of boys is attracting world wide atten- tion. If you have a boy of high school age an investigation, either through the medium of the catalogues or a per- sonal visit, of the advantages offered at Culver would be more than worth while. General Baden-Powell, the fa- mous English General and Founder of the Boy Scout Movement, said to the - cadets at Culver recently : "I have seen the cadets of all nationalities at their work, but I must say you beat the lot. Your organization and superb equip- ment are a revelation to me."

Bridge Building. Cadets are taught to build both spar and pontoon bridges, an attractive feature appealing strongly to the boy's constructive instincts.

Mounted Artillery Drill .- "Front Into Battery !" This mounted drill is a feature rarely afforded in schools.

A SWIMMING RACE

The weekly aquatic meets are among the most interesting and attractive features of the summer course.

Both senior and junior meets are held, affording a great variety of events. Ribbons are awarded each week and medals at the end of the term.

Purpose of School

EN years ago the Culver Military Academy planned the first session of its Summer School and announced its purpose on this page. This purpose was in brief to afford an attractive and really profitable summer outing for boys; to furnish a properly balanced combination of work and play that would give a full measure of wholesome relaxation and pleasure and at the same time provide an effective substitute for the haphazard summer with its aim- lessness and mental inertia.

Each succeeding year this problem has been set forth as the purpose of the school and to its solution the Culver Military Academy has lent its unusual equipment and resources and given the best thought and study of its experienced corps of instructors. It is believed that the results obtained permit the school to speak now not only of the purpose, but also of its fulfillment.

Something more comprehensive and more effective than the summer camp has been evolved. The school has grown both in size and in perfection. Every detail and method has been carefully worked out and new features tested and added to the course until the Culver Summer Naval School has grown to be the largest and most successful boys' summer school in America, unique in both plan and equipment, attracting boys from almost every state in the Union, and frankly recognized as a model by many similar schools which have since been developed.

The Summer Naval Course, with its wholesome open-air exercise, its picturesqueness and touch of romance, makes a stronger appeal to a boy's imagination and interest than anything that could be devised for an organized summer outing.

It also solves effectively what has long been a problem to thoughtful teachers and parents, it gives a chance for the boy backward in his studies to make them up without sacrificing his vacation, and an opportunity for the boy who is regular in his work to keep his mind fit by a little mental exercise each day, and gives both a summer really worth while, genuinely refreshing and with a liberal gain in muscle, tan and health.

At the same time the school offers the advantages of proper associates, a healthy moral atmosphere, personal supervision by experienced teachers, a special system of tutoring, and a beautiful and healthy location, free from the temptations and bad influences of the city, town, or large watering place. Whole- some pleasures are provided in abundance, and many cadets affirm that their summers at Culver are the happiest they have ever spent.

1912 Term Begins June 27, Ends August 22

THE SECOND COMPANY

The cadets in this picture are wearing the cool and attractive work suits, used during boat drills and other exercises where great freedom of movement is desirable. The clean cut, wholesome appearance of these cadets will give to those unfamiliar with the school an idea of the splendid class of boys who make up its enrollment.

ER

MUSTER

The Legislature of the State of Indiana has honored the Culver Summer Naval School by passing a law authorizing the organization of the corps as the First Naval Battalion of the State of Indiana.

The picture shows the '09 Battalion being mustered in by companies. This law gives added prestige and secures additional equipment and opportunities through the National Government, but places the cadet under no obligation to perform drill or other duties after the close of the school.

-

Combined review of Naval and Cavalry Schools showing the Cadet Band of about twenty pieces, Naval Battalion of Four Companies, and a Troop of Cavalry. In the background is the Academy's splendid Riding Ilall, the largest and most complete of its kind in America; also the model camp. The Cavalry School is described in a separate catalogue which is sent on request.

Requirements Cadets are not accepted under fourteen years of age, or less for Admission than five feet two inches in height. No boy will be accepted who is not of excellent moral character. The applicant must furnish two references who are competent to give unbiased testimony of his character. The corps of eadets under authority from the Legislature of the State is organized as the "First Naval Battalion of Indiana." This law gives the corps added prestige, equipment, and opportunities, and, to meet the special requirements of the school, provides: that the battalion shall be under command of the Commandant of the School, that the term of enlistment shall be one year, so that the cadet is under no obligation to attend the school except for the one term, unless he so desires. A cadet entering the school, unless exeused by previous request of parent for physical or other reason, enlists as above indicated and acquires the prestige of service recognized by the State and National Government.

Location and Environment

The school is located on Lake Maxinkuckee, in Northern Indiana. It is eighty miles from Chicago, and while of easy access from every section of the country, is far enough away from any town or city to be entirely free from their undesirable influences. The school is situated on the north shore of the lake, and is fanned by its cool breczes throughout the summer.
