E
INTRODUCTORY.
It is with pleasure that the publishers present this, the twelfth volume of the FT. WAYNE CITY AND ALLEN COUNTY DIRECTORY, to its patrons and the public. Since its inception, much labor, enterprise and money have been devoted to this work, and every year the publishers have still further enlarged and improved upon preceding volumes, until, in the present issue, is exhibited the best and most thorough results, and an arrangement, correctness and fullness of detail never before surpassed; and a review of its varied contents will show that nothing has been omitted that experience and expert knowledge, acquired by exclusive attention to works of this class, could contribute to make it complete, comprehensive and reliable.
The first 55 pages are devoted to useful miscellaneous information relating to the city and county in general, comprising a street and avenue guide, lists of city and county officers, fire department, churches, schools, banks, railroads, incorporated institutions, miscellaneous insti- tutions and societies, newspapers, secret and benevolent societies, etc. Succeeding these, are 458 pages containing an alphabetically arranged directory of all the inhabitants of the city, followed by 76 pages con- taining a list of all persons engaged in business or the professions, classi- fied under their respective callings. Immediately succeeding this are 14 pages containing an alphabetically arranged list of all persons in the towns of Monroeville and New Haven. The remaining pages contain name, number of section, number of acres, assessed valuation of same, name of township, and postoffice address of all farmers, etc., in Allen county.
This edition of the Ft. Wayne City Directory shows 15,572 names, which, with the multiplier of three persons to one directory name-the lowest used in any city in the United States-gives a total population of 46,716. Sincere thanks are tendered to those who, by their patronage and support, materially aided and encouraged the publishers in their work, and also to those who kindly assisted in collecting the informa- tion required in the preparation of this volume; and, in conclusion, the publishers would say, that in due time the thirteenth volume of the Ft. Wayne City and Allen County Directory will be issued, and that noth- ing shall be wanting on their part to maintain the high standard already attained, and they confidently hope to meet with the recognition the work deserves.
