VOLUME XIII.
R. L. POLK & CO., PUBLISHERS,
40 TO 44 LARNED STREET WEST, DETROIT, MICH. For List of Publications, see back fly leaf.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1890, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the Office of the Librarian of Congress. at Washington, D. C.
INTRODUCTORY.
The thirteenth volume of the FT. WAYNE AND ALLEN COUNTY DIREC- TORY is presented to the public with the belief that the result attained must reflect credit upon the thorough system and faithful efforts of the publishers; no class of work requires more diligence and carefulness than the compilation of such information as the directory contains, a letter or figure misplaced often rendering it unserviceable ; with these facts in view the work has been prosecuted with a determination to make it a complete and reliable representative of the city with all its various institutions and organizations, its incorporated companies, societies, churches, schools, banks, etc., its business firms and private citizens. It is the purpose of the publishers that the directory shall keep pace with the rapid development of the population and resources of the city and county, and with each succeeding issue improvements and additions will be made.
The first 56 pages are devoted to useful miscellaneous information relating to the city and county 'in general, comprising a street and avenue guide, lists of city and county officers, fire department, churches, schools, banks, railroads, incorporated institutions, miscellaneous insti- tutions and societies, newspapers, secret and benevolent societies, etc. Succeeding these, are 516 pages containing an alphabetically arranged directory of all the inhabitants of the city, followed by 74 pages con- taining a list of all persons engaged in business or the professions, clas- sified under their respective callings. The remaining pages contain name, number of section, number of acres, assessed valuation of same, name of township, and postoffice address of all farmers, etc., in Allen county.
This edition of the Ft. Wayne City Directory shows 17,129 names, which, with the multiplier of three persons to one directory name-the lowest used in any city in the United States-gives a total population of 51,387. Sincere thanks are tendered to those who, by their patronage and support, materially aided and encouraged the publishers in their work, and also to those who kindly assisted in collecting the informa- tion required in the preparation of this volume; and, in conclusion, the publishers would say, that in due time the fourteenth volume of the Ft. Wayne City and Allen County Directory will be issued, and that noth- ing shall be wanting on their part to maintain the high standard already attained, and they confidently hope to meet with the recognition the work deserves.
