-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly adhered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all de- partments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat addi- tional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and standard- ize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and

social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business in- tegrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circu- lation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seek- ers, rather than on the number of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved or- ganizations and individuals engaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the high- est and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

INTRODUCTION

R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of the Hammond City Directory, as well as more than 750 other city, county, state and national directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1931 edition of the Ham- mond Directory, which also includes Calumet City and Burnham, Ill. An important feature of this edition is the double house-numbering, which shows the new number followed by the old number in parentheses.

Confidence in the growth of Hammond's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for the directory is a mirror truly reflecting Hammond to the world.

The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and pro- fessional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Hammond Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information per- taining to the community.

Population

The estimated population of Hammond is 65,712, based on the number of individuals' names in the alphabetical section of the directory, with due allowance for children and for women whose names are not listed separ- ately from those of their husbands. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is in- cluded in the directory.

Five Major Departments

The several essential departments are arranged in the following order:

THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 11 to 15, presents a variety of information, such as lists of city, county and federal officials; post office and public school directories; statistical review; manufacturing, trade and civic surveys, etc.

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 21 to 64, printed on tinted paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Hammond and vicinity. These pages will be found particularly interesting and instructive to substantial purchasing factors. The adver- tisements have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. The community's activities, in many interesting phases, are authentically pictured. In an ambitious and progressive community like Hammond, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is very great, and frequently, pressing. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal sup- port the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms and corporations is included in pages 65 to 457. A feature of this section is the inclusion of the wife's name in parentheses following that of the husband.

THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, covers pages 461 to 552. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers. A feature of this section is the distinction between tenant-owned and rented homes.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 553 to 595. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests of the whole community in alphabetical order under

10

INTRODUCTION

appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indis- pensable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Direc- tory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller." As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classifled Business Directory than through any other medium."

Community Publicity

The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the com- munity, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of resi- dence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and service as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Hammond and vicinity, for business men, everywhere, realize that the city directory represents a community as it really is.

The Hammond Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Hammond City Direc- . tory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Direc- tory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the city directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.
