Where cities are doubling their population every ten years.
Where converge the main traffic thoroughfares of the United States.
Where raw materials meet in the rough, are converted into the fin- ished product and shipped to every portion of the globe.
With the lowest freight rates in existence, viz: Chicago rates.
On navigable waters.
What Hammond's Geographical Location Means
Today Hammond has sixty-five thousand people.
The steel interests, super-power in- terests, railroad interests, oil-refin- ing interests, automobile and airway interests, by word and deed, foresee the time, not far distant, when Ham- mond will be the hub of a metropoli- tan district of from six to seven mil- lion people, living from Waukegan, Ill., to Michigan City, Ind. The na- tion's industrial center of gravity is shifting to the Calumet Region.
Why will the Calumet Region be- come the greatest industrial area on the face of the globe?
BECAUSE OF GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION
Because of its geographic location, the Chicago-Calumet Region has:
1-Unequalled Transportation
a. It is the natural, unobstructed transportation focus of a great, low-lying plain, already possessed of the greatest network of railroads on earth. This concentration of transportation lines alone is enough to guarantee the growth of a great city.
b. It is the center of a network of hard-surfaced roads radiating to every point of the compass, afford- ing quick dispatch service for smal- ler tonnage. It is a highway freight center.
c. Enough has been made known of well-prepared plans to make it cer- tain that the region will also be- come the airway transportation focus of the country in the not-far- distant future.
d. Waterways, embodied in the Great Lakes, canals and rivers, mean wholesale water-borne transporta- tion, and in turn, mean
12
INTRODUCTION
e. Cheap and favorable freight rates, the lowest obtainable anywhere.
2-Lavish Raw Materials
a. Accessibility to the cheap and fa- bulously plentiful iron ore deposits of the Lake Superior district pro- ducing over four-fifths of all Am- erican iron.
b. Accessibility to untold resources of minerals, such as clay. limestone and sandstone.
3-Cheap Fuel Plentiful
a. Great coal fields located just over the horizon to the south of the Chicago-Calumet Region supply it with an abundance of high-grade industrial coal. That means
b. Cheap power for manufacturing purposes. It means
c. The development, because of the presence of unlimited quantities of water, of an unrivaled super-power system.
d. Because of its geographic location, the region has attracted to itself great oil refineries, prepared to de- liver fuel oil in unlimited quanti- ties.
4-Markets Quickly Reached
a. Because of its transportation faci- lities and because within a night's ride are located 62,000,000 people, the markets for the products of the Chicago-Calumet Region are very accessible and quickly reached.
b. Not to be forgotten is the money market. The banks in the region are capable of handling the needs of a great industrial community.
5-Manpower Resources
a. Having within its confines the world's third largest city, the Chic- ago-Calumet Region has an inex- haustible supply of brain and brawn constantly at its command. And back of all this is the fact that tributary to the Chicago-Calumet Region is a rich and fertile farming soil beyond compare, favored by weather conditions into producing billion-bushel cereal crops and rais- ing meat and dairy products in abundance.
That, in a nutshell, is the story of our geographic location and its ad- vantages. And while we may all re- joice over the marvelous growth of the region, we should not lose sight of the fact that this development is still in its infancy. Dr. J. Paul Goode, eminent geographer of the University of Chicago, whose recent lecture in Hammond forcibly turned our atten- tion to these predominant natural resources and advantages, predicts for the Chicago-Calumet Region the site of the world's largest city.
Thank Dame Nature
The Chicago-Calumet Region is, therefore, merely the visible and phy- sical expression of the focusing into this favored spot of the various geo- graphic advantages in serving a tri- butary territory, which, in turn, is the source of the region's present and fu- ture greatness.
