History of La Grange County, Indiana.
La Grange County, Indiana, is in the northeastern part of the state, ad- joining the State of Michigan ou the north. The latitude of the court house at La Grange is ahont q1º 45' north, and about longitude 8º ivest from Washington.
The county contains about to14 congressional townships, or 388 sections, hnt for civil purposes is sululiviled into eleven civil townships. Like all this region, lying southeast of the great Lake Michigan, the formation be- longs to the perioil designated by geologists as the " Drift period," and the surface presents great variety. Small prairies are found in the northem and easteru portions, variously desigualed as " Mongoquinong," "English," " Pretty," and " Brushy " prairies, and a portion of the celebrated " Hlav- Patch " extends into the southwestern part of the county. The northern part of the 'county is ilrained by the Pigeon River anil Crooked Creek, which are trilintories of the St. Josephi, whose waters flou' into Lake Michigan ; the southern portion is drained by the Elkhart River, also n tributary of the St. Joseph River.
Lakes are numerous, the most important being Oliver, Adams, H'ilmer, Atwood, Third, Sloau and Nouvoe in Johnsou Township, Long, Turkey anil Lake of the Woods iu Milford ; Dallas anil Me Loughhu in Clear Spring Township ; Fish in Bloomfield ; Wall aud Cedar in Greenfield ; Twour in Lima ; Stane and Fish in Van Buren ; Shipshewana in Newbury, and Long Lake in Eden. The total area of ivaler in the county is in the neighborhood of four thousand (4,000) neres, 1,500 of which are in Johnson Township.
'This connty, with the exception of the prairies mentioned, ivas like nearly all of Iuiliaua, very heavily timbered with a great variety of deciduous trees.
The soil shows much ratiely. Clay, loam, sand and gravel, with its- meuse deposits of peal, good brick clay, and, in many localities, extensive bouliler drifts. Onarry stone, we belierc, does not exist, at least not suffi- ciently near the surface for practical purposes. Bog iron is found in various localities.
The county is remarkably well watered, and tbe facilities for raising wheat, con, onts, grass, and nearly all varieties of apples, pears, peaches, grapes, plums, cherries, and a great variety of berries, both cultivated and wild, are unsurpassed in this latitude.
Pigeon River, Crooked Creek, ur Faun River, and some other streams, afford consideralle water porrer, but not on an extensive scalc.
The Pigeon Rirer is a very steadly stremin, varying bur little through the year, being fed by mimerons lakes in La Grange and Steuben Counties.
The earliest settlements, according to all accounts, in La Grange County, uns inaile by Benjamin Blair, who brought his family froin what is now Defiance County, Ohio, in August, 1528, and stopped for a shout time on Pigeon Prairie, but remoreil to a location about one mile west of Lima Village in December, 1828.
The farmis now (August, 1874) ourned by George Doll and J. F. D. Craig, were both pre-empted by Mr. Blair and his son, F. A Blair.
Moses Rice anil his son, lea Rice, came in 1$29. Ica Rice kept a sort of trading house, where he exchanged whisky and tobacco with the ludiaus for furs and peltrie». The Rices did not stay very long. Arthur Burrows, a sou-in-law of Rice, the Garduers and Wm. Thrall also settled in 1829. John Kromer settled on Pigeon Prairie, Michigan, in 1828, but removed to lima about 1830. Letquel Fobes and John Jewell also settled in 1830. Jonathan Woodruff and Thomas Gale came very early, and one or the other of them opened the first regular store in Lima. In 1831 there anired John B. Howe, who laught the firstschool in the county ; J. T. Ilolthis, who was the first clerk of the circuit court ; James Whitaker, who is saiil to have built the first frame house ; Sanniel Hall, and Judge Newton and sons. Jason Thurston anil Timothy Wallace were also very early in the county ; audl Nathan Fou-ler is said to hare built a cabin on the north bank of Crooked Creek the same senson that Mr. Blair settled. Daniel Siuclair was another carly selller. The Reverend Christopher Cory settleil in the Summer of 1832, aud was the best permanent preacher.
Sketches of other early settlers will be found in the histories of the re- spective lounships.
La Gmauge County was organized according to au act passed by the Gen- eral Assembly of ludinua, anil approved February 3, 1832.
Hon. Charles II. Test was the first presiding Juulge of the Sixth Juilicial Circuit, his commission bearing date January 23, 1830. Inther Newton, and Ephraim Scely were associates. J. T. Hobbs was Clerk and Recorilei. Nehemiah Coldeu was first Sheriff, hy appointment from the Goreruor. Jesse Harding was the first Coroner.
Thomas Gale was appointed first County Ticasmer.
T'he first meeting of the County Board was helil May 14. 1832. At this meeting the county was divided into tyro (2) townships, Liuma auil Green field, the dividing line leing the center of range len (10). Benjamin Blair uns nppointed Assessor for Lima Township and Ephraim Seely for Greenfieldi.
'The first Inspectors of Election were Leninel Fobes for Liina, and Jesse Champlin for Greenfieldl.
The first term of conrt uns held October 22, 1832, at the house of Moses Rice, nene 1.ima.
The names of the first Grand Jury are as follows : Thomas Gale, fore- man, Ebenezer Fish, Ami Lawrence, Wm. Thrall, Isane Wolgamot, Samuel Fish, Oliver Closson, Jonathan Gardner, Benjamin Gale, Samnel llenderson, John Langdon, William Miller, John Anderson, Wmn. A. McNeal, Jr., and
Richard Gorthrop. Wm. J. Broivu was Prosecuting Allorney, but, heing sick, Samuel C. Sample was appointed in his place.
Ål the date of the first settlement in the county the Pollawattomic In- dians occupied this region, and their principal village was located where the Village of Lima nowy stands. It was one of the largest Indian towns in the country, extending for several miles along the Pigeon River, and containing front 1,500 to 2,000 people. The sandy loau of the beautiful Mongoquinong Prairie afforded the Indians unusual facilities for the production of corn and what fety vegetables they were familiar with, and it was no doubt a husy capital for the reil meu. Deep ivorn trails from all directions eentered there ; game was abundant, and its uxtural advantages made it one of the most im- porlaul points in all the vast country of the Northivest.
The imerpretation of " Mongoquinoug" is said to be "Big Squaw Prairie," but the ludian names are so little understood that it is extremely uncertain what the correct meaning in English may be, but one thing is tolerably certain, the Indian language was very significant, and every proper naine exceedingly appropriate, and no doubt this high sounding word had its characteristic application.
The post office al Lima was first called Mongoquinong, but changed afterwards to Lima, for convenience iu speaking and writing.
The marsh lands of the county are quite extensive. The Townships of Bloomfield, Johnson, Milford, Van Buren, Clay, Clear Spring, Newbury and Eden abound in marshes, but many of them are in process of drainage, ex- tensive ditches having been cul, particularly in the southwestern part of the county, and the lime will come. no doubt, wben a large part of ivhat is now uncultivated lands will become the most valuable in the county. Lima and Greenfield touruships are comparatively free of marsh land, and are well im- prored and flourishing agricultural districts, perhaps the most ucalthy portion of the county.
In common with the entire North, La Grange County shared in the terri- ble excitement consequent upon the hieaking out of ibe slaveholders' rebel- lion in 1861.
