PREFACE.
Ir will be obvious to many that the size of the present Directory is somewhat smaller than the one published a year ago. This is account- able to the absence of Cincinnati advertisements, and the history of In- dianapolis, which has now become generally known. With regard to the list of names, we have only to say, that there is an increase of about 1,500 over that of last year's publication.
In the first edition of a Directory, some few errors will necessarily occur. In the canvass for this work we had difficulties to contend with, which, in all probability, will be obviated in our next issue. For such imperfections we claim the indulgence of our patrons, with the assur- ance, that in future we will strive our best to guard against them.
There are a few instances in the city where the number on the houses do not agree with those designated in the Directory, which is accounted for by the numbering being changed after going to press. This is an evil over which the publisher had no control, and he hopes citizens gen- erally will exonerate him from all blame.
Many thanks are due to those who have advertised in the work, there- by benefiting themselves, and aiding very materially the undertaking. We trust the manner iu which their cards are displayed will prove satis- factory.
The work was printed and bound by Messrs. Bingham and Doughty, of the Sentinel, whom, we feel assured, will receive all the praise and approbation due to their efforts.
In conclusion, the book is thrown upon a generous public, with the hope that it may meet with the satisfactory reception which the pub- lisher has labored to achieve.
