INTRODUCTORY.

Herewith is presented to our patrons and the general public the Thirty-second con- secutive volume of the Indianapolis city directory.

The edition for 1885 had a total of 740 pages ; the volume preceding the present one showed a gain of 100 pages over that of 1885, while this edition has 930 pages-a gain of ninety pages over the 1886 edition. 1364837

The directory for last year contained the names of 45,012 persons. In this volume there are a total of 48,375 names -- a gain during the last directory year of 3,363 names.

While these figures show that the city of Indianapolis is having a steady yearly growth in population, the classified directory presents the fact that almost every trade, profession and manufacturing enterprise known to the leading metropolitan cities of the country, is fully represented in the capital city of Indiana. The information contained in the miscellaneous directory has been carefully revised and many important additions made, until it now is a true reflex of the religious, educational and social interests of the city.

The excuse made by some business men for not ordering the directory when the can - vasser is obtaining information, is, that in a city like Indianapolis no necessity exists for its annual publication. As evidence to the contrary, the statement is made that during the canvass for this volume, which was made mostly in the last six weeks of 1886, no less than 1,310 vacant dwellings, stores, offices, etc., were found. The latter part of January, 1887, these vacant premises were again visited, when 574 were found occupied. This shows that there are between five hundred and six hundred changes in location of places of business, residences, etc., every month. These changes and the influx of new residents seem to make the annual publication of the city directory an imperative necessity.

All that years of experience, a liberal ontlay of money and the aid of a corps of trained canvassers could do to make the present edition entirely reliable and correct has been done. To the business men who have given the publication their support in the way of subscriptions and advertising favors our thanks are extended, and to those who never buy a directory, we would say that in the future, as in the past, we shall use our best endeavors to have their information accurately and briefly inserted.
