THE VANDALIA LINE

Invites attention to a FEW FACTS.

FIRST-It is the shortest and quickest line between Indianapolis and St. Louis, and runs four fast express trains each way in addition to local accommodation trains.

SECOND-Pullman Vestibuled Sleeping Cars are carried on all through trains.

THIRD-The employes are uniformly polite and attentive.

FOURTH-All complaints of whatever character receive prompt and careful attention.

FIFTH-The mechanical excellence of the road-bed being constantly main- tained, and the construction of the train equipments being of the latest and most substantial character, the highest speed can be made with perfect comfort and safety.

SIXTH-The new and beautiful dining cars, with their dainty china, rich silver- ware, spotless linen and bounteous bill of fare are a delight to travelers.

SEVENTH-Trains are run with remarkable regularity.

EIGHTH-For the above and other good reasons the United States Govern- ment has chosen the Vandalia Line or its Fast Mail Route between the East and West.

NINTH-Test the above statements by giving the line a trial.

For through rates, time of trains, sleeping car reservations or other informa- tion, call upon or address,

INTRODUCTORY.

This is the thirty-sixth volume of the Indianapolis City Directory, and is the thirteenth consecutive volume issued by the present publishers. Thirty-six years is a long time, more than a generation. Since the first Directory of the city was issued one generation of business men has passed off the stage, if not across the dark river, and another generation has pressed forward to take their places. Probably not a single name contained in the first Directory of Indianapolis will be found in this one, unless it be of some person bearing the same name with one who has passed away.

The Directories of these thirty-six years would make a considerable library, and if carefully studied would reveal many curious and interesting things con- cerning the growth of the city. They also represent a large amount of painstak- ing labor and each one is an improvement on its predecessor in point of com- pleteness, accuracy and reliability. These qualities are indeed the life of a city Directory, and it has been the aim of the publishers to embody them more and more in each successive publication. No Directory is absolutely perfect, but it is a good deal to be able to say that during a period of thirty-six years there has been steady improvement.

The present Directory contains 49,048 names against 48,282 in the last one. This includes all the suburbs of the city which properly and for all business pur- poses belong to it. These suburbs were not included in the United States Census of 1890, which therefore showed considerably less population than was indicated by the Directory of that year. At the rate of three persons to a name, which is a fair estimate, the present enumeration would give a population for the city and suburbs of 147,144 or deducting for the suburbs 17,000 would leave 130,144 for the city proper.

It may not be amiss for us to say that in the course of making the enumera- tion for this Directory, penetrating of course to every part of the city, our canvassers have found abundant proof of its steady and healthy growth. Not only is this apparent in its rapidly extending streets and suburban building improve- ments, but in the growth of its manufacturing industries, by the enlargement of old and the establishment of new ones. The statistics of the growth of the city in manufacturing would be very interesting and instructive. In this, as in all other respects, Indianapolis is easily holding her own among western cities and main- taining her place as the most prosperous inland city of the country.

To the representative business and professional men of this city, who by their patronage and support have aided us in producing this volume, we desire to return our thanks, and to those who never buy a Directory we would say, that in the future, as in the past, we will endeavor to have their information correctly but briefly inserted.
