The publishers take pleasure in presenting to their patrons the fifty-second annual volume of the INDIANAPOLIS CITY DIRECTORY with the assurance that the high standard estab- lished by our past issues has been fully maintained and that we have spared neither labor or expense to produce a work as thor- ough and correct as is possible for a publication of this kind.

This Directory contains 88,954 names, and on the basis of 2 I-2 inhabitants to each name we estimate the population to be 222,385. This is an increase in names over 1905 of 3,312, and in population of 8,280.

Nearly 89,000 names are contained in this Directory, four- fifths of which are canvassed in duplicate, necessitating the handling of practically 160,000 names for which there is no rule, guide or regularity to spelling, thousands of which, al- though pronounced alike, would be spelled in many different ways and all correctly, and often members of the same family will spell their names in a different manner. It is impossible to publish a work of this magnitude without some errors, but years of experience have established a thorough system, which · · has reduced them to a minimum, and enables us to furnish Indianapolis with a directory which will be found accurate and reliable and an answer to almost every question which may relate to our city and its inhabitants.
