INDIANAPOLIS.


During the year 1905 Indianapolis, has made remarkable progress in many ways. The city has prospered from commercial and professional standpoints more than it ever has in any year of its history. On every hand the resident of this "no mean city" can see evidences of prosperity.


It was the city's banner building year, more than $6,000,000 being expended for new structures, varying from humble cottages to mam- moth sky-scrapers. Approximately, three quarters of a million dollars has been expended in the city's churches during the year, or will have been ex- pended before the improvements begun in 1905 are completed.


In the matter of new residences erected in 1905, the outcome is very gratifying. But Indianapolis is more than a "city of homes." It is a hustling, thriving business city, filled with up-to-date and progressive establishments and dotted thick with great and growing manufactories, which have experienced the greatest year's business in their history.


That Indianapolis is attracting wide-spread attention in the world of manufacturing is evidenced by the fact that during 1905 no less than eighty-nine different manufacturing plants were established in the city, them coming from other cities. At the present time the city has almost 2,300 manufacturing establishments, in which approximately 45,000 people are employed, receiving $15,000,000 in wages annually.


Some time ago, Indianapolis became noted as the largest inland city in the country ; that honor still rests with us. It is within thirty-five miles of the center of population of the United States. Another remarkable fact about the population of Indianapolis is that during the decade from · 1890 to 1900, the city had a percentage of growth larger than any other city in America of its class.


Indianapolis is one of the greatest railroad centers in the country ; for its size, it is THE greatest railroad center. At the present time, by means of thirty-two steam railroads and interurban lines, all of the great cities of the central west can be reached from Indianapolis in five hours. During the past year, five new steam roads were projected, most of which will, no doubt, be completed in 1906.


This city is the greatest interurban center in the world, all the lines terminating at the magnificent Traction Terminal Building, which is the only exclusive interurban station in the world. At this time, one and one- half million people are within two hours' ride of Indianapolis.


The Commercial. Club, in addition to much other work, has appointed a boulevard commission that is planning the extension of Fall Creek Boule- vard to the Benjamin Harrison Army Post. This enterprise seems now to be assured.


Among other accomplishments of this club, it may be said that the fol- lowing enterprises are well under way :


The Citizens Gas Company.


A Coliseum that will seat approximately 16,000 people.


The building of an Armory for the Indianapolis Batallion of Infantry.


At the close of the year, the club realized, after eleven years of persistent work, the beginning of track elevation at Indianapolis. Railroad traffic is now being carried over elevated tracks of Massa-

chusetts avenue and Tenth street and work is already under way at Kentucky avenue and West street.


The Civic Improvement Association to look after the improve- ment of streets, shade trees, parks, distribution of garden seeds, etc.


"The Water Commission," the purpose of which is to keep in close touch with local conditions with reference to water supply, fire protection, insurance rates, etc.


The Methodist Book Concern Commission, whose object is to secure the location of the manufacturing plant of the consolidated interests of the Methodist Book Concern of New York and other cities.


The 1906 Year Book of the Commercial Club will narrate hundreds of accomplishments directly or indirectly carried on by the officers and com- mittees of this, which now has a membership of 1,250.

Indianapolis is the fifth largest publishing city in the United States.


One hundred and seventy-five churches with a membership of 70,000.


Indianapolis is noted for its freedom from labor strikes and disturb- ances.


The resources of our banks and trust companies, aggregating $70,000,- 000.00.


All freight depots are located in the heart of the city within a radius of four squares.


A Belt Railroad surrounds the city, expediting shipments and furnish- ing factory sites.


One-fourth of the entire population of America is within a radius of 300 miles of Indianapolis.


Eight public parks within the city limits, covering 1,3II acres, and three parks just outside with 310 acres.


Indianapolis has the largest and most imposing monument ever erected by any government in honor of its soldier dead.


New $2,000,000 Post Office and Federal Building completes chain of fine public buildings, second only to Washington.


One hundred and fifty-five miles of electric street railroad, under one system at a four-cent fare with universal transfers.


One hundred and fifteen miles of paved streets ; 500 miles of improved streets ; 155 miles of sewers ; 250 miles of water mains. Sanitary condi- tions the best.


Headquarters of the Independent and Central Union Telephone Com- panies. Rates for offices and stores, $2.00 and $3.50 per month; resi- dences, $1.50 and $2.00.


Two new boulevards were constructed in 1905; the Fall Creek Boule- vard, extending from Central to Capitol avenues, and the Pleasant Run Boulevard on the south side.


Indianapolis is noted the world over for its beautifully shaded streets and comfortable homes, second only to Philadelphia in the number of work- ingmen to own their own homes.


Indianapolis is within fifty miles of the most extensive coal fields in the world and is the center of the Indiana coal trade which is daily growing into larger volume. The main offices of nearly all of the Indiana coal mines are located in Indianapolis and the contracts for production of coal are made here. Steam coal for factory and similar use is laid down at the

door of the consumer at about $1.25 per ton, a price which is not dupli- cated, quality considered, in any other city in this Union. Two hundred passenger trains arrive and depart from the Union Sta- tion daily and more than three times that number of electric cars enter the

STREETS AND AVENUES.


THE Street Directory is an alphabetical arrangement of the names of the Streets and Avenues of the city. By the decimal system of numbering houses recently adopted in this city, one hun- dred numbers are allotted to each square. On streets running north and south the numbering be- gins at Washington street. The streets running east and west are numbered East and West from Meridian street. All other streets not commencing at either of the above points are numbered in accordance with this system. The names and numbers of intersecting streets and avenues are given in the order in which they occur, which enables one to tell between what streets a certain number is. For instance, you have 820 Harlan street : by reference to the Street Directory, you find 800 at Lexington av. and 900 at Pleasant street ; consequently, the place you wish to find is between Lex- ington av. and Pleasant street.


The marginal letters of the alphabet refer to the nearest street car line. For example, you wish to go to 520 E. Sixteenth : you refer to Sixteenth street in the Street Directory and find that 520 would be between Central av. and Park av. and the letter "B" in the margin, then by referring to the street railway lines you find the letter "B" is the Central av. line, which is the nearest car.
