INTRODUCTORY 1358785

Even if it were possible to write the progress of Indianapolis one day and to print it the next, the history would not be adequate. For the forward movement has taken fast hold on the community, and every minute marks an advance.

No medium records this history so nearly up to date as the Indianapolis City Directory, for perforce, it must follow closely to render dependable service to its thousands of patrons. And in this volume for 1911, the publishers believe the public will find even greater satisfaction than in those which have preceded.

The census taken by the government last year gave Indianapolis a population of 233,650. This figure was gratifying, for it showed a gain of 38.1 per cent during the last ten years, while New York city, the country's metropolis, boasted a gain of only 38.7 per cent.

And yet we are even a greater city than these figures indicate. Of necessity the government must enforce rigid restrictions in the census-taking. This volume there- fore presents several thousand names that were omitted in the census count for Indianapolis-employes in this city with legal residences at other points, but to all intents and purposes citizens of Indianapolis; residents of the new additions just outside the city's boundaries, but active in the business and social life of the com- munity. And it includes the names of several thousand new citizens who have re- moved to Indianapolis since the count seven months ago.

This Directory contains 102,136 names, which indicates a total population of 255,340, for experience shows that there are two and one-half inhabitants to each name. The publishers believe that this is a conservative estimate of the population of this community at the present time.

Population is not the only growth in Indianapolis, however. The pages of this volume present evidence of general civic and commercial advancement. Many new industries are listed. New business blocks, new apartment houses, new theaters, new school buildings, new churches-all these mean a progress more important to a mu- nicipality than mere numbers of inhabitants.

The general information found herein is varied and complete. It is only the by- product of the Directory proper, to be sure, for the chief purpose is to present ac- curate lists of names and addresses. Careful and painstaking effort has been ex- pended in gathering and classifying information, and the publishers desire to express appreciation of the efforts of those who have co-operated with the representatives of the company.

Patrons of this company are invited to make use of the Directory Library main- tained at the offices, 320-324 American Central Life Building, where the directories of all the larger cities will be found. These volumes are received in exchange for the copies of the Indianapolis Directory, which occupies a place in similar libraries over the country, giving constant and favorable publicity to Indianapolis.
