Fire protection and water supply are of the very best.


Indianapolis is the fifth largest publishing city in America.


Indianapolis is noted for its freedom from labor strikes and disturbances.


It has two hundred churches, with a membership of seventy-five thousand.


A Belt Railroad surrounds the city, expediting shipments and furnishing factory sites.


All freight depots are located in the heart of the city, within a radius of four squares.


Indianapolis is the sixth city in the United States as a pork and beef packing house center.


Indianapolis has an area of 30.77 square miles, the elevation above sea-level vary- ing from 714 to 832 feet.


One-fourth of the population of the United States is within a radius of three hundred miles of Indianapolis.


Our two-million-dollar United States Court House and Post Office is the most modern and complete in America.


Four hundred and eighty-five steam and electric passenger trains enter our Union Station and Traction Terminal daily.


Indianapolis has the largest and most imposing monument ever erected by any government in honor of its soldier dead.


We have at the present time 168 miles of sewers, with sanitary conditions the best; 125 miles of paved streets, and 255 miles of water mains.


Forty-five hotels afford accommodations to all visitors, even during the many conventions that are held here, and which are of such frequency as to average one for each day in the year.


There is no better labor market in the world. There are 45,500 people employed in the city by the manufacturing industries. Of this number fully 30,000 may be called skilled mechanics.


Indianapolis has one hundred and fifty-five miles of electric street railroad, under one system (at a four-cent fare, with transfer), a greater mileage in proportion to the population than that of any other city.

INDIANAPOLIS OF TO-DAY


The honor of being the largest inland city in the country still rests with Indian- apolis. Situated within thirty-five miles of the center of population, and possessing a most wonderful system of steam and electric railroads, it has a location of unsur- passed advantage.


Indianapolis is recognized by educators as having a model school system. Visitors come to our city daily to investigate its merits. We have sixty-five public schools, two high schools (one academic and one manual training), four colleges and acade- mies, a large central library, with nine branch stations.


This city is the greatest interurban center in the world, all the lines terminating in the magnificent Traction Terminal Station, which is the only exclusive station for electric lines in the world. By means of steam and trolley transportation one and one-half million people are within two hours' ride of Indianapolis.


Indianapolis has seven national banks, with an aggregate capital of over six mil- lion dollars, and surplus and undivided profits of over three million. Three of the national banks have a capital of $1,000,000 each, and one of $2,000,000. The total resources of the national banks and trust companies aggregate $70,000,000.


The largest industries of Indianapolis are engine and boiler shops, mill machinery and saw manufactories, structural iron and bridge works, foundries and machine shops, carriage and automobile manufactories, beef and pork packing houses, cotton and woolen mills. However, we can claim that no city, possibly in the world, has a larger variety of industries.


The census shows that the city within her corporate limits has a population of less than 250,000 people, but the network of steam and electric roads centering in Indi- anapolis, offering very low passenger rates, and quick, convenient transportation, to- gether with the attractive features of the retail stores themselves, make the city the principal shopping center for a territory inhabited by two million people.


Indianapolis has long been known as the city of homes. A relatively greater num- ber of residents own their homes than in almost any other American city. There is almost a total absence of the foreign floating element, and of the disturbances fre- quently found in the various seaboard and interior ports. This is not a closely built city, and with its wide streets and alleys, the various houses receive an unusual amount of air and sunshine.


Indianapolis is within fifty miles of the most extensive coal fields in America, and is the center of the Indiana coal trade, which is daily growing into larger volume. The main offices of nearly all the Indiana coal mines are located at Indianapolis, and the contracts for the production of coal are made here. Steam coal for factory use is laid down at the plant of the consumer at about $1.25 per ton, a price which is not duplicated, quality considered, by any other city of our class.


Indianapolis made wonderful progress in 1910 in a commercial way. Many new industries were established, both in manufacturing and mercantile lines. There are to-day fully 1,200 manufacturing plants employing five or more persons-some of them giving employment to 2,000 persons. At the present time "The Greater Indian- apolis Industrial Association," organized by members of the Commercial Club and other commercial bodies, is engaged in a campaign for the sale of lots in establish- ing an "industrial city" adjoining Indianapolis on the southwest, whereby they expect to bring new factories to this city employing 10,000 people. "Beech Grove," the industrial center east of the city, is already successfully launched. Thus it will be seen that the city of Indianapolis is offering every possible facility for manu- facturing industries.

THE Street Directory is an alphabetical arrangement of the names of the Streets and Avenues of the city. By the decimal system of numbering houses adopted in this city, one hundred numbers are allotted to each square. On streets running north and south the numbering be- gins at Washington street. The streets running east and west are numbered East and West from Meridian street. All other streets not commencing at either of the above points are numbered in accordance with this system. The names and numbers of intersecting streets and avenues are given in the order in which they occur, which enables one to tell between what streets a certain number is. For instance, you have 820 Harlan street : by reference to the Street Directory, you find 800 at Lexington av. and 900 at Pleasant street; consequently, the place you wish to find is between Lex- ington av. and Pleasant street.


The marginal letters of the alphabet refer to the nearest street car line. For example, you wish to go to 520 E. Sixteenth: you refer to Sixteenth street in the Street Directory and find that 520 would be between Central av. and Park av. and the letter "B" in the margin, then by referring to the street railway lines you find the letter "B" is the Central av. line, which is the nearest car.
