INTRODUCTORY
1358786
This, the Directory of the City of Indianapolis for 1912, records another definite step forward in the history of a great city.
This volume presents an endless array of important and necessary information -facts and figures marshaled in convenient and logical order, any one of which can be instantly called to stand at "attention" and salute the reader.
It is not a "Who's Who."
It is a "Who's Here" and "What's Here"-and it reflects accurately the life and growth of this community.
Who looks for Romance between the two covers of a City Directory?
Few look, but those who do will find it. It's there.
This volume is a record of one year's achievement, progress and success-the most romantic of all records.
It records the birth of new businesses, new sky-scrapers, new homes! It tells of new enterprises. It speaks the fact when one man's ambitions and energy have carried him from superintendent to general manager or president of a business establishment.
It shows the growth of established concerns-their removal to better and larger quarters.
It gives the names and addresses of 2,150 men and women who one year ago were not citizens of Indianapolis. It tells where these new citizens may be found at their work, what they do there-and where they live-a city of people all in themselves.
It records successful courtships and weddings, by pointing out the residence of new householders.
It follows the city's physical growth, giving the names and locations of new streets as they gradually creep into the open country on all sides.
It reflects, in fact, every impulse and activity of a city's people as surely as a mirror, for it is nothing more and nothing less than an accurate picture of what they are doing and what they have done.
This directory contains the names of 104,286 persons, and based upon this Indi- anapolis to-day has a population of 260,715. Experience has demonstrated that there are two and one-half inhabitants to each name listed, a proportion which we believe to be fair and conservative. The population of Indianapolis as announced in the Directory for 1911 was 255,340. Indianapolis has thus gained in one year 5,375 inhabitants.
The names, addresses and all facts presented in this volume have been care- ยท fully gathered, compiled, arranged and classified. Our one thought has been ac- curacy and completeness, for we appreciate the good will, confidence and support of our patrons. Their satisfaction and convenience have been our aim. And for their assistance in furnishing information and other help, we extend our sincere thanks.
At our offices, 320-324 American Central Life Building, we maintain a Directory Library, containing current copies of the Directories of all the larger cities. Patrons of this company are urged to make use of this Library and to avail themselves of any other courtesy which is within our power.
