INTRODUCTORY

1358789

There are listed in this directory 113,151 names, a gain of 3,049, as compared with the number in our directory of 1914.

We take pleasure in announcing this, as the large increase in the num- ber of names listed represents a proportionate increase in the city's popu- lation.

By multiplying the number of names in this volume by 21/2, a method that has been demonstrated to give a fair and conservative estimate of population, it is shown that the estimated population of Indianapolis is 282,877, a gain of 7,622, as compared with the estimate, based on the same method of computation, of the preceding year.

In addition to its fixed population, Indianapolis has an exceptionally large transient population, by reason of its many conventions, its central location and its transportation facilities. In connection with this, it might be interesting to note that during the year 1914 there were handled at the Indianapolis Traction Terminal Station, in and out, a total of 259,806 passenger cars, an average per day of 712 cars; and a total of 7,012,763 passengers, an average of 19,213 passengers per day. At the Union Sta- tion there were handled during the year, in and out, a total of 58,437 passenger trains, with a total number of 409,481 passenger cars.

It should be borne in mind that the growth of Indianapolis has been of a steady and substantial nature, due to its natural and acquired advan- tages, and not by reason of any campaign of expansion.

One of the features of this volume, which we introduced in our direc- tory of 1914 and which has been warmly commended, is the street and avenue guide and directory of householders, page 1533 to page 1921. It gives not only, in alphabetical order, the names of the streets and avenues . of the city, and, by means of key letters, the car line nearest any place, but also gives the number of each building on each street and avenue and, opposite the number, the name of the householder. In office buildings the occupant of each room and the number of the room are shown where practicable.

Other valuable features of this volume include the following: A care- fully collected and compiled list of citizens, industrial and commercial enterprises ; federal, state, county and city officials ; office buildings and apartment houses ; churches ; schools ; the various literary, patriotic, fra- ternal, benevolent and other organizations, and a classified business di- rectory.

We maintain at our offices, 320-324, 8 East Market street, a directory library for the use of our patrons, and we are pleased to have them avail themselves of it or any other service at our command at any time.

In this library are directories of 250 of the leading cities and towns of the country, and in many ways these volumes have proven of considerable value to business and professional men of Indianapolis.
