Introductory.
C HE fifteenth volume of The Caron Directory Co's. New Albany and Jeffersonville City Directory for the years 1908 and 1904 is herewith presented to the public.
New Albany has made substantial gains since our last issue in 1901. This Directory contains 11,804 names as against 11,540 names for the 1901 Directory making an increase pf 264 names which multi- plied by two, the lowest multiplier used makes a net gain of 528 and a population of 28,608.
A large number of new factories are being erected in and around New Albany, others are being enlarged and extended and an air of general prosperity pervades the entire community. The Louisville and Southern Indiana Traction Co. has just completed an electric line between New Albany and Jeffersonville, which is one of the largest and most valuable improvements made in recent years. The Carnegie Library, situated at Spring and Bank streets is nearing completion and will be an acquisition to the city.
A High School Building to cost $80,000 is now in course of erec- tion, many new and handsome residences, are going up or have been completed this year, and all the public utilities-Water Works, Elec- tric Lighting plant, Gas Works and . Electric Street Railroad system have been greatly enlarged and entirely modernized.
The City Council recently passed an ordinance for paving with asphalt about four miles of streets. A sewerage system is now being agitated, that if carried out will add greatly to the sanitary conditions of the city. Much credit is due the New Albany Commercial Club for the progressive spirit manifested in the city.
Jeffersonyille is keeping abreast of the times as will be shown by the increase in population since 1901. This directory contains 7,755 natnes, an increase of 287 and an estimated increase in population of 474. The present population of Jeffersonville is 15,510. Jefferson ville has made substantial progress during the past two years. Several factories have been added and a number of fine business houses and residences have recently been erected. The Mercy Hospital just com- pleted at a cost of $30,000 is an ornament to the city.
The Deaconess Hospital has been remodeled and re-furnished at an expense of $10,000. The Carnegie Library to be located at Spring street and Court avenue and a new public school at Spring and 18th streets are in course of erection, the former to cost $15,000 and the latter $80,000. The Louisville and Southern Indiana Traction Co. has recently purchased the old street railway franchise and is contracting about ten miles of new track in the city.
There is and has been for some time a lively demand for small property in and around Jeffersonville. Daneton and Fulton, two new suburbs just north of the city are being platted. The streets are to be of asphalt while the sidewalks will be of granitoid. Jeffersonville will furnish electric light, gas and water by extending its mains. The city is making many street improvements and is reconstructing several miles of sidewalks with granitoid.
The Jeffersonville Commercial Club recently reorganized is com-" posed of many of the most prominent citizens of Jeffersonville who are concentrating their energies toward making the city & manufacturing center.
