PREFACE.

PREFACE.

The day was when that ever changing individual, the oldest inhabitant, could have furnished the enquirer with all particulars concerning the where- abouts of any resident of New Albany, but "old father time," in his ceaseless round, has supplanted the quiet village with the busy hum of a city com- merce, large manufacturing establishments of various kinds, ship yards, &c., and a population of near twenty thousand, all of which require some more reliable means of conveying information regarding the names, occupation, and abiding places of the inhabitants of the city. To supply this want has been the object of the present publication, (the second Directory ever published here,) and it is hoped an investigation of ils pages will prove ils worthiness to the title of a Directory. That a publication of this character is deemed beneficial by the business community, is demonstrated by their almost univer- sal use in cities of this size throughout the United States.

In looking over this work it will be observed that it contains & Bearnais SUMMARY, giving at a glance the number of business houses engaged in the various branches of trade, or in the professions.

Those who are disposed to dissect the work, for the purpose of showing up what few errors there may be in it, should hesitate to condemn without knowledge of the difficulties that beset the pathway of the compiler.

In consequence of the streets not being numbered, abbreviations had to be used, which will be found in the proper place. The Business Directory, and Appendix, furnish much useful information to the resident and stranger.

The present work contains some six hundred more namnes than the former Directory of New Albany, and we believe the Classification will be conceded to be very complete and satisfactory.

To those who have kindly aided in the undertaking, by advertising in its pages, our thanks are due, and we trust that they may be rewarded seven- fuld for their liberality.

The printing and binding were executed at the office of the Daily Tribune, by Messrs, M. GREGO & Sons, whose facilities in both departments, are equal to any in the West. They merit our thanks for the assistance rendered un during the compilation, and our respect for their courtesy.

The course of study is thorough and extensive. The corps of Teachers in , the several departmenta are able and experienced. The accommodation good, and ample for boarders and day pupils.

New Albany has been long and well known for its excellent institutions of learning; its accessibility, healthfulness, morality, intelligence and refine- ment, render it n vory desirable location for a young ladies' Seminary. Such a standing, it is intended the New Albany Female Seminary shall sustain.

It will be the constant aim of this Institution to combine all those elevating and refining influences derived from religion, science, literature and art, which go to form the best style of female character. Particular attention will be paid to
