INTRODUCTORY.
-The publisher tukces pleasure in presenting to the ciftions the seventh volume of: Caron's New Albany and Jeffersonville City Directory, it is in every respect an improvement on its predecemors. The New Albany de- partimené contains eight thousand six hundred and twenty- tre names, (8625) an increase of six hundred and eleven (611) over 1884. The Jeffer- sonville department contains four thousand one hundred and forellen names (4114) a falling off of five hundred and eleven, names (511) sinoe 1884. The uraal method of arriving at the number of inhabitants, in by compating from the names contained in the Directory, by multiplying the whole number presented by three (8), which is considered by pobliches se a fair estimate. A we take three as a multiple, Mowy Albany, bás a poya- lation of twenty-five thousand eight hundred and seventy-five (26875). an increase of one thousand eight Bandred and thirty three (1888), while Jeffersonville has twelve thousand three hundred and forty-two (1284%), a/falling off if one thousand five hundred and thirty (1580): Strangera will quite naturally ask what were the cansee which led to the falling of in the population of Jeffersonville the question is canfly an wered. The great floods of '1888 and 1886, at which time five-eighta id the city Was under water, and the closing down of the Ohio Falle Car Cota- paar in 184, which triployod from Two thousand lo twenty-five hundred mon. These great drawbacks, however, have beenentirely overcome, isit, in the United States Government building a lovee in fruit of the city, and pesond, the resumption of' work sé the Ohio Falls Car Co. on August 1st, 1886. FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The fire department of the City of New Albany has been conducted as & paid department since 1865. As now consti- tuted, with one hook and ladder truck and three reel carriages, it is sustained at an annual expense of about $25,000, which includes the cost of fire-plugs.
