INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting the public with the nighth volume of Caron's New Albany and Jeffersonville City Directory the publisher notes with much pleasure the progress the cities have made during the past two years. The New Al- bany department contains nine thousand five hundred and sixty three numex, (9,563) an increase of nine hundred and thirty eighth (838). The Jeffersonville department contains five thousand one hundred und ninety one names (5,191), as increase of one thousand and seventy seven (1,077). The population can be fairly approximated at three times the number of names contained in the directory, so that the population of New Albany is twenty eight thousand six hundred and eighty nine (28,689), an increase in popoli- tion of two thousand eight hundred and fourteen (8,814), and that of Jeffer- vonville, fifteen thousand Sve hundred and seventy three (15,578), an in- crease in population of three thousand two hundred and thirty one (8,281). Besides the large increase in population there have been a number of large factories constructed and new in mcccettal operation; of the old ofres the DePanw Glass Works, N. A. Woolen Mille, N. A. Steun Forge Works, and the N. A. Rail Mills have largely increased their capacity.
The publisher does not claim for his work an absolute troedown from or- rors and omissions, but he has guarded Against them carefully and to the best of his ability, and believes the book will give general satisfaction.
