Introductory
In submitting Volume VII of the New Castle, Ind., City Directory and nine rural routes radiating therefrom, it is gratifying to note the progress that is being made in industries and growth of population.
A great factor in the upbuilding of any city is its civic pride; the fact that our citizens stand as a unit on everything that affects the prosperity of our city is worthy of commendation.
The City Directory is one of the foremost enterprises of any city; it is generally referred to by the press of the whole country as a semi- public institution of great value.
The Directory is more than a mere list of names of residents, glv- ing their various occupations and addresses, it is an Infallible guide to our city, for our people and for the stranger within our gates. It not only deals with our people, but with our government, our institutions and various other organizations. It is a recognized standard work of reference and becomes the most reliable history of our city and its citizens. As there is no other publication in the world which gives the information as contained in the City Directory, there is probably no other publication In which all the people are so vitally interested.
To gather the data and compile a volume of this character is no easy task. It requires time, a well defined system, acquired ouly by experience, the patience of Job, and incurs no little expense. Few people have any idea of the work it means and the tenacity it takes to publish a reliable directory.
In preparing this book the publishers have spared neither time nor expense, and if errors oceur or a name is omitted which should appear in the work, it is generally the fault of the public and not of the publisher, as every house is visited and it is not the publisher's or canvasser's fault if some one fails to give all the information or gives it lucorrectly. The intentions of the reliable publishers are always for improvement, and you can always count on getting as accurate a di- rectory as circumstances will permit. No directory is perfect.
It must be borne in mind that many changes of location, transfers of real estate and exchanges of business or employment, or places of employment, are constantly occurring and that many persons whose names, numbers, occupations and places of business are correctty given In the Directory may change their places of residence or business In a short time; but the Directory will give the clue by which they can be found.
In conclusion, we desire to thank our patrons for their support and to extend our thanks to the publie in general for the courteous way in which nearly everyone supplied our canvassers with the desired data. Yours truly, DALE PRINTING CO. DAILY TIMES.

City of New Castle
New Castle, Indiana, or "The Rose City," which name it acquired because of the many beautiful roses grown here, is an industrial city of fifteen thousand people, situated in the heart of Indiana's most pro- ductive corn belt, forty five miles east of Indianapolis, the center of the country's population.
As every city bas its mark of distinction, so New Castle boasts a population one hundred per cent. American, who have surrounded themselves with beautiful homes, magnificent churches, and a public school system second to none.
To her churches New Castle looks for moral, intellectual and social leadership. Lyceums, entertainments and the promotion of In- ter-church athletic relationships, both in baseball and basketball mark constructive church efforts.
In addition to inter-church athletics, New Castle has seen fit to provide recreational facilities for her citizens. In this capacity a virile Y. M. C. A. provides a gymnasium and athletic field with two baseball diamonds and several tennis courts, while the Maxwell Motor Corpora- tion provides an athletic field which is used by the community. Three movies and one playhouse provide indoor amusements.
Memorial Park, consisting of one hundred acres, located about a mile from the heart of New Castle, is an ideal spot for a park. Its hillsides and valleys, thickly wooded, and its many springs, make it what one dreams of for an afternoon's outing or a picnic. When com- pleted, it will have beautiful drives, an athletic field, an artificial lake, and a Zoo.
Also the Westwood Country Club, two and one-half miles west of the city, is one of the beauty spots of this section, occupying a 40-acre rolling plot, with an excellent nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, and a modern club house, where the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs have their luncheons and evening entertainments, and where the greater number of social functions are held.
Socially, New Castle's citizens are not lacking, for with the two business men's clubs, Rotary and Kiwanis, besides active fraternal or- ders aud Ladies' Auxiliaries, in addition to church activities and women's clubs, takes care of this very necessary side of life.
Industrially, New Castle has developed greatly in the past decade, until her factories give employment to more than five thousand work- ers. Four banks, aggregating a total of $4,189.699.89 assets, two Build- ing and Loan Associations, and three Loan Associations, are Indicative of the wealth of the community.
The commerce of New Castle finds ample outlet and inlet over the Pennsylvania, Big Four, L. E. & W. Rallroads, and two traction lines, which are aided by an excellent system of graveled highways through- out the County and State. There is much co-operative effort among New Castle retailers through the Chamber of Commerce, which is not only building a community spirit and aiding local industries and re- tailers, but is actively working to bring more Industries to New Castle.
