INTRODUCTION
The 1920 edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Lafayette City and Tippecanoe County Directory is herewith presented, with the assurance of the publishers that its contents are practically complete in every feature that serves to make a first-class work of its kind. The unrivaled facilities of the publishers and their many years of experience in di- rectory making have been utilized, and the same care exer- cised, in the production of the volume, as in the making of their larger metropolitan directories.
The Directory embodies several distinct departments as follows :
The Miscellaneous Department, pages 13 to 32, include data concerning city and county officials, public and private institutions, banks, cemeteries, churches, courts, hospitals and homes, libraries, miscellaneous schools and colleges, so- cieties, newspapers, parks, public buildings, halls, postoffice data, railroads, secret and benevolent societies and informa- tion covering every phase of industry and activity in the territory covered by the Directory.
The Street Guide extends from page 33 to page 53.
The Alphabetical List of Names of Citizens, business firms and corporations is embraced in pages 55 to 597; this is followed by a similarly arranged list for the several towns and villages in the county, viz: Battle Ground, Buck Creek, Clark's Hill, Colburn, Dayton, Montmorenci, Romney, South Raub, Stockwell and West Point.
The Classified Business Directory is embraced in pages 599 to 710, and shows the various manufacturing, mercan- tile and professional occupations compiled under headings appropriate to the class of business pursued. This Depart- ment will be appreciated as a "Buyer's Guide." The Direc- tory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller.
The closing pages contain the names and postoffice ad- dresses of residents on rural routes, the land owners with number of acres and assessed valuation. This feature serv- ing to put the public in touch with farmers and others resid- ing in rural areas, this information not being available in any other publication.

The Lafayette Chamber of Commerce
The Lafayette Chamber of Commerce is an organiza- tion of representative merchants, manufacturers and pro- fessional men whose chief objective is to foster every civic interest, to encourage the location of industries and to ad- vance in every way the welfare and prosperity of the city.
Directory Library
A library of City and County Directories and State Gazetteers has been installed by us in the offices of the Chamber of Commerce for the free use of our patrons. As the latest Directories are issued, they will be added to the library, thereby keeping it up-to-date from year to year. We extend a cordial invitation to each and every one of our subscribers to make frequent use of the library and to con- sult the Directories on file as often as desired. Copies of this Directory are placed by the publishers in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the larger cities of the country, where they are readily available for reference use by the public. There they serve as perpetual advertise- ments of Lafayette, for business men the country over real- ize that the City Directory represents the community as it really is.
