1897-98 INTRODUCTION. como 2

The fourth volume of our Logansport and Cass County Directory is here presented with the belief that it is complete and accurate. Careful and competent assistants have aided in its compilation, and every effort has been made and expense incurred to insure correctness and perfection in all respects.

An impression seems to exist that in order to issue a directory all that is necessary is to send out men, get some names, arrange and print them, write a preface and deliver the books to the subscribers. As a matter of fact, such is not the case; names are taken in dupli- cate and the facts are proven as are accounts in a double entry system of bookkeeping. The hardest labor, most careful workmanship, and heaviest expense are required in perfecting discrepancies and omis- sions which are discovered by the duplicate system. A complete directory is never the result of a single canvass, and is only arrived at by a liberal expenditure of both time and money, utilizing every year the information obtained in previous issues. Directory publish- ing is a vocation peculiar to itself, and can be carried on properly only by those educated in and thoroughly conversant with its numer- ous details, which require years of training.

Notwithstanding the general business depression throughout the country, Logansport continues to show a healthy increase in pop- ulation and business interests, which is gratifying to every citizen. In respect to healthfulness, comfortable or even luxurious living, business opportunities, educational advantages and social and religious associations it is not excelled, and the citizens have reason to be proud of the city that has grown up, as may be truthfully claimed, without booming.

POPULATION.

As a basis on which to figure population we desire to say that some directory publishers use the multiple 3 to each name. This we have always contended is too high, and consequently we use, and have always used, the multiple 212. This volume contains 9525 names; deducting 10 per cent (952) for duplicate names of business firms, we have 8573 names (above the age of 15 years and not in- cluding wives), and by using the multiple 2}: we show a population for Logansport and suburbs of 21,433.

In conclusion, we desire to thank our many patrons for the sup- port they have given us, and trust that the result of our efforts will meet with their approval and appreciation.

Very respectfully, LONGWELL & CUMMINGS.

DON'T LEND YOUR DIRECTORY

AN APPEAL TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS :

We would offer a suggestion to those who, from business neces- sities, or actuated simply by a public spirit, have favored us with an order for a book :

DON'T LEND YOUR DIRECTORY.

We receive many complaints from our patrons to the effect that they are bothered so much by borrowers. Borrowers, generally, are chronically such. The man who borrows a Directory never buys one, never subscribes for it (or for anything else). These same indi- viduals, when asked to subscribe, "don't need it," "never have any use for it," "know everybody." Yet the virgin freshness of its leaves has hardly been sullied by human touch before this nuisance wants to borrow your Directory. Again we ask,

DON'T LEND YOUR DIRECTORY.

You may not get it back. A man who is not honest with himself cannot be honest with others. The business man who asks to borrow your Directory told our solicitor he "didn't need one." Take him at his word.

T O THE INTELLIGENT .< PURCHASER OF PRINT- ED MATTER, UPON .. WHOM MAY FORTUNE SMILE, THESE:«

OULDST thou. O, gentle read- er, make thine effort succeed. whether it be to advertise thy wares, to pub- lish an an- nouncement. or to get the uttermost benefit in any branch of the erstwhile mystery of imprinting ? Then hark ye ! here is a word for thine ear upon which it behooveth thee to ponder well in the secret places of thine understanding. Listen:

When thou hast printing to be done get good printing.

When books first began to multiply with mysterious frequency, the peo- ple ascribed the new writing, which we now know as imprinting, to the handiwork of the devil; and even in this day and generation there are some printers who must be agents of His Satanic Majesty, for how otherwise are they enabled to glut the market with printing, even of the cheap-and-nasty-kind, at less than the cost of production, unless they steal the paper, and produce the types from the hell box of their more scrupulous fellows ?

Opposed to this interpretation of the printer's art (alas ! too often to be better described as blacksmith's botch work) is that of the master printer who tries; who provides himself with the latest implements of his craft; who studies the works of the old masters of the art; and who charges accordingly.

Avail thyself of this; for even if his charge be many ducats in ad- vance of that of his fellow-crafts- man, it will put broad pieces of gold in thy pouch by attracting the read- er's attention to thy statement and insensibly forming his opinion that thy house is perforce as good as thy printed matter.

Let not the cost deter thee; for should the good printer's charge be double that of the cheaper craft -- man, the wage of the postman re- mains the same: the other fixed charges are still fixed; and what seemeth to be an increase of an hundred fold in cost is found to be but a titlie.

For instance, let us suppose thou desirest to sow the good grain of thy advertisement broadcast through- out the land. To accomplish thy fell purpose thou must perforce be at these costs for each thousand disseminated, be they broadsides, or bulls, or indulgences, to-wit:

Envelopes, say two ducats; in- scribing same, one ducat: carriage in fees to the courier with the gray livery' twenty ducats: folding. in- sorting and sealing. one ducat: total fixed charge, twenty-four golden du- cats. This total must be expanded whether or no, and to it must be added the fee for imprinting, which it be but two ducuts, the price desir- ed by many short-sighted wighis who pose as patrons of the liberal arts, will fix the grand total at six- and-twenty ducats. Now, if perad- venture the printer persuadeth thee to expend double the amount allot- ted for his product, the actual cost is not doubled, but is increased less than eight per centum. while the ele- ment of effect is doubled or trebled.

Avail thyself of all that lyeth in the art: and let us be thy servants in the matter.
