INDIANAPOLIS AS IT IS IN 1855.

PREFACE.
PREFACE,-what is a preface ? The historical signification is, said before. It is most generally used as a title or heading to mat- ter prefixed to a book, but not necessarily forming or constituting a part of it-to matter which might, often perhaps, with equal pro- priety, be entitled a chapter for buncombe. Many will consider ours just such a one. We intend, (if we can), to write one to suit our- selves. We compile and publish the work for the benefit of the public-we write the preface for our own. But while we profess to publish the Directory for the public benefit, we have a right, and we expect that the citizens will support us in the undertaking if they wish to derive the benefit arising from its use. There are many citizens who, being strangers to the use of such a work, can- not appreciate it, and, as a matter of course, we cannot expect them to support our first issue. This prejudice we expect our first issue to do away with, and for our next annual issue we shall at least hope for the united support of our fellow-citizens. Our issue at this time will not be so complete and definite as we could wish, in consequence of so many persons being prejudiced against it, and and considering it rather a superfluous work ; many actually refused to give us their names. Many could not tell on what street they lived, and one individual-one of the proprietors of an esteblish- ment, where there are some forty or fifty hands at work, refused them time to give us their names and residences. Imperfections arising from this cause, of course, cannot be regarded as our fault. Some persons refused to give either their names or residences through fear of having taxes to pay ; while others would assign no reason, but steadily refuse to give us any satisfaction. Because we happened to inform some lady that she was mistaken with regard to the
iv
PREFACE.
nature of her husband's office, we were called on by her hus- band, and threatened to have a " dornic pounced off of our devo- ted head," an operation which we by no means relished, and tried to pacify the gentleman but could not, and had to allow him to go at large, breathing vengeance on us if we ever did so again. Such cases, we are happy to state, are few, or we would no doubt, long ere this, have been on an exploring expedition among the stars, or buried in oblivion, and covered deep by the anathema maranathas of persons made furious by such mistaken grievances.
But to the subject. A Business Mirror and City Guide is what we had designed to present before our citizens, one that, by a few moments' consultation, will give the inquirer an idea of the business of the city, and which, on application, will direct the stranger to his friend, or the citizen to his neighbor. How well we have succeeded we leave for our patrons to judge. We have labored assiduously and diligently to present to our patrons as complete an idea as pos- sible of the business of the city on a whole, as well as to trace out and portray its various ramifications, and also to give to the stranger as favorble an idea as possible of its various local, business and ocial advantages. Hoping to appear before you with increased facili- ties another year, we courteously request the favorable consideration of an intelligent public.
INTRODUCTION.
IN presenting to the public a Directory of our young and flour- ishing City, it is expected, and is necessary, that we should give at least a short history of the city, its location, improvements and growth, to its present high commercial position.
Indianapolis was located and laid out in 1820, and incorporated January 6th, 1821. In October following, 314 lots central in the old plat of the city, were sold for $35,596. Lots which sold then for $200 and $300 would now readily command from $15,000 to $25,000. At the period referred to, the site was covered with dense forests, and for forty or fifty miles round, the country still re- mained in its pristine condition of an intrenched wilderness.
The original town plot was one mile square, but like all progress- ive cities, Indianapolis has over-stepped its artificial limits and ex- tended itself on all sides.
Of late years it has became a chief center or terminus of Rail- roads, and is very appropriately termed the " Railroad City," and from its position is likely to maintain its ascendency in this respect. There are several railroads now in course of construction in addition to the eight roads now in successful operation, pouring in daily their thousands of passengers, and conveying in merchandise, &c., to and from it the wealth of an empire.
It is also on the line of the great National Road, and from it diverge several McAdamized and plank roads pointing to all the im- portant places within and beyond the limits of the State.
In manufactories, it has also made rapid progress, and at the present time has mechanics employed in every handicraft.
Few cities in the States north of the Ohio, indeed, have so excel- lent a prospect of future greatness, and there are those who wisely
vi
INTRODUCTION.
anticipate its becoming one of the prominent cities of the Great West in the number of its people, the amount of its trade, and in that enterprise which is so necessary to the fulfillment of all high expectations. ,
To give some idea of the rapid growth of the city, we give the population at the different periods from 1830 to 1855.
Population in 1830, 1,085 ; in 1834, 1,600 ; in 1840, 2,692 ; in 1847, 8,504; in 1855, 16,000, showing an increase in six years of almost 100 per cent.
The last enumeration, taken in July, '55, has been confined strict- ly to the corporation. Should we add to this the population of West Indianapolis, and all those on territory adjoining the city on the north, east and south, who are directly connected with the city in their business transactions, and looked upon as citizens; and add to this also the colored population, who were not enumerated, it would swell the number to about 20,000 souls.

CITY SCHOOLS.
The City have in successful operation a system of Free Schools under the control of a Board of Trustees and Superintendent.
There has been erected in each Ward a good brick building in which are kept the Ward Schools. These are large and comforta- ble buildings capable of accommodating from one hundred and fifty to two hundred pupils.
There is also, in addition to the Ward Schools, a Central High School, in which the higher branches of education are taught.
The pupils of this School consist principally of those who have- gone successfully through the Ward Schools, and passed an exami- nation, which is always necessary before entering this School.
