CIRCULAR OF THE BOARD OF TRADE
OF THE
CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS.
PERMIT us to call your attention to Indianapolis, the Capital of Indiana, as a manufacturing and commercial point.
Indiana contains more than 1,200,000 inhabitants. Her surface comprises 22,000,000 acres of very fertile soil, nearly all of it avail- able for agricultural purposes, and the whole capable of sustaining an immense population. Her coal and iron fields, but little more than one hour's ride from this city, are of very fine quality and inex- haustible in quantity ; the beds lie near the surface, are of easy ac- cess, and may be worked with great facility. The best varieties of timber are found in her magnificent forests, and the supply is equal to any demand whatever. Water power to an almost unlimited ex- tent is furnished by her numerous streams, affording great natural facilities for manufacturing. Thus combining the elements of power and wealth, she invites capital and labor to employ and develop them.
Indianapolis is situated in the midst of this fertile region, being within five miles of the geographical centre of the State, and more than one hundred from any large city. Formerly its position was completely inland ; but the completion of the Madison and Indian- apolis Railroad, in the fall of 1847, marked a new era in its history. The population at that time was about 4,000, and the town possessed scarcely any manufacturers or trade. Now her inhabitants number near 16,000, and the hum of machinery in her rapidly increasing manufactories can be everywhere heard ; eight railroads, comprising 1,500 miles of track, have been completed ; seven roads, comprising 900 miles, are under contract, and rapidly approaching completion ; and two roads, comprising 400 miles, have been surveyed, and com- panies formed to construct them. Bellefontaine, Central, Cincinnati, and Terre Haute are parts of the great central through routes (uniting at this point) from the eastern cities to St. Louis, now nearly completed, and destined to extend to the Pacific. We are thus placed directly on this great highway of the world, and here the commerce and travel of an immense region will be concentrated. Seventeen different railways, comprising 2,800 miles of track, and having twelve thousand miles of connec- tions, directly centre here, making this point the greatest railroad centre in the world. They bring all parts of this and neighboring States within a few hours' ride of this city, and connect with all the important routes of trade and travel in the country. Railroads are revolutionizing inland commerce, and are turning trade and travel from ther former channels ; passengers and freight will soon be car- ried on them cheaper than on water ; the points concentrating the greatest number will therefore possess the greatest advantages. In this respect we are unrivalled. Four plank roads terminating here have also been completed ; these are essentially the farmers' roads. The city is improving with great rapidity. Capital expended in building, invested in real estate, and in all classes of manufactures, but especially in locomotive and car building, will yield large and certain returns. As a point at which to pack pork and beef, it pos- sesses peculiar advantages. Great inducements for farmers exist in the central parts of the State-fine lands being still obtained at very reasonable prices. Machanics of all kinds are much needed, and great numbers can obtain immediate employment. White River, Fall Creek, and the Central Canal furnish fine water power imme- diately on the borders of the city, which can be easily and success- fully employed. Materials for extensive manufacturing enterprises can be obtained in abundance, as cheaply as at any other western point. Our climate is mild ; our city and country healthy ; provisions are cheap and plenty ; and our facilities for transporting manufactured products and merchandise of all kinds, are unsurpassed. For these reasons we think this must soon become one of the principal manu- facturing points in the country. Rapidly as our manufactures are increasing in extent, variety, and importance, they are yet unequal to the demand. In consequence of its unrivalled facilities for com- munication, it must also become one of the principal commercial and wholesaling cities in the west. As a place of residence it is very de- sirable, being located on a beautiful and extensive plain. The streets are broad, laid out at right angles, and well shaded. The public

squares are large, and the city is adorned by a number of very fine public buildings. It is distinguished for its sobriety, and for the number of its churches and sabbath schools. It possesses a system of free graded schools, wherein all the youth of the city may obtain a good education ; besides these, a number of well conducted high schools and colleges exist. Other reasons might be mentioned, but we think the importance of the matter sufficiently obvious, and will close by earnestly requesting your aid in developing, at this point, the resources of the Giant West.
