Some Facts About

Santa Fe Route:

In point of mileage (9,000 miles and over), equipment (solid vestibuled trains), and general excel. lence (ballasted road bed, steel rails, etc.), we rank among the few great railway systems of the world. Some lines begin nowhere and end at the same place. Look at our termini : Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Galveston, Denver, El Paso, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. Look at our train service :

THROUGH PULLMAN PALACE VESTIBULED SLEEPERS,

Chicago to Galveston, San Francisco and Los Angeles ; and to Denver.

But because the miles are many, it does not follow that there is a corresponding deficiency in the details of management. On the contrary, everything is carefully looked after. The comfort and safety of passengers is never forgotten.

OUR PERSONALLY-CONDUCTED EXCURSIONS TO PACIFIC COAST

Are a big card for the season of 1891-'92. Every Thursday evening Pullman Tourist Cars leave Chicago - on regular train for Northern and Southern California Points, running through via Kansas City (which station they leave Friday morning of each week), in charge of experienced excursion conductors. Second-class tickets honored. A small extra charge for double berth in Pullman. These excursions are patronized by the best classes of people, and are specially intended for ladies and children, the aged and infirm. Address

INTRODUCTORY.

The thirty-seventh edition of the Indianapolis City Directory, being the fourteenth annual volume issued by the present publishers, is submitted to the severe and searching test to which it will be daily exposed, with a confidence acquired by the experience of years.

POPULATION.

The present Directory contains 52,008 names against 49,048 in the last one, an in- crease of 2,960 names. This includes all the suburbs of the city which properly, and for all business purposes, belong to it. At the rate of (2}) two and a half persons to a name, which is the lowest multiple used by any Directory publisher, the present popula- tion for the city and suburbs is 130,020. In the official returns of 1890, Indianapolis was number 27 in the list of large cities of the United States.

POSTOFFICE.

The cash receipts from the sale of stamps at the Postoffice for the year ending 1891, were $268,999.96, an increase of $33,757.95 over 1890.

BUILDINGS AND IMPROVEMENTS.

The records show a wonderful increase in building improvements, not so many business blocks were erected in 1891, but the number of residences was much larger, The most imposing block put up during the year was the Marion Block, corner Meridian and Ohio Streets. Several new buildings of note are now being constructed, and will be finished early in the spring. Among them being the Commercial Club, County Jail and Public Library Buildings. From January 1st to December 26, there were filed 2,198 applications for building permits, the value of the improvements amounting to $2,250,995 against $2,016,186 in 1890, an increase of $234,809.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Indianapolis has a remarkably well organized and equipped fire department. The force consists of (115) one hundred and fifteen uniformed officers and men, divided into eighteen companies, with houses in different parts of the city, all of which are connected by telephone through Chief Webster's office, corner New York and Massachusetts ave., whence orders are given by that officer and his assistants. There are six steam and three chemical fire engines, five independent hose reel carriages, and four hook and ladder trucks. The fire alarm system uses 120 miles of telegraph wire and has 143 fire alarm boxes. The running expenses from March 6th to December 31st were $97,909.64.

The men and horses in this service are carefully trained, and always ready on a

-

INTRODUCTORY.

moment's notice to get to a fire and do effective work. There are now under construction three steam fire engines, which will arrive here about May.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

The system of public education of the city of Indianapolis excels any in the United States. There are thirty-seven public school buildings, which, with their annexes, oc- cupy 304 rooms, and employ 347 teachers. The whole number of scholars enrolled in the public schools during the past year was 17,074, and the average daily attendance 12,624.

POLICE DEPARTMENT.

The police department at the present time consists of a force as follows: Superin- tendent, one; captains, two; sergeants, six; detectives, seven; doormen, two; patrolmen, 55. Total, 73. The running expenses from March 6 to December 31 were $71,323.94.

BANKS AND BANKING.

There are seven banks here, as follows: Bank of Commerce, Capital National Bank, Fletcher's Bank, Indiana National Bank, Indianapolis National Bank and Meridian National Bank, with a combined capital of $2,600,000. The deposits of these banks De- cember 31 was $12,383,522.77.

The clearing house returns for the year 1891 were $214,165,090.

One of the prominent features of this volume is an entirely new map, engraved ex- pressly for the Directory. It shows to the latest possible date all new streets and changes in streets.

It would be more advantageous to the public to have streets renumbered during the months of May, June, July and August, so that the new numbers might appear in the following issue of the Directory.

We desire to call attention to the fact that we have on file in our office, corner Cir- cle and Meridian streets, a complete Directory library. It is maintained at a consider- able expense, and is designed for the free use of the public. .

To the representative business and professional men of this city, who by their pa- tronage and support have aided us in producing this volume, we desire to return our thanks, and to those who never buy a Directory we would say that in the future, as in the past, we will endeavor to have their information correctly but BRIEFLY inserted.

DIRECTORY BORROWERS.

We receive many complaints from our patrons to the effect that they are bothered so much by BORROWERS. These parties are not the private citizen nor the stranger in the city, who steps in, looks at the Directory and goes out, but merchants, busi- ness and professional men, who need a Directory every day of the year, yet who are too close-fisted to buy one.

These same individuals are the ones that borrow your Directory " just for a minute," which, in the majority of cases, means a day or perhaps a week, unless you remember that they have it and send for it.

These same borrowers will tell the Directory canvasser that he has "no use for a Directory," that he "knows everybody," and vice versa, " everybody knows him."
