AVING had more than eighteen years' suc- cessful experience in securing Letters Patent, and having also a thorough knowl- edge of Mechanics as well as Patent Law, I continue to offer my services to Inventors and Owners of Patent Property, confident of my ability to give entire satisfaction to those who desire the best protection available for their inventions.
I not only procure Patents, Trade Marks, Design Patents, Copyrights, Labels, and all forms of Protection granted by the United States and other Governments on works of Invention and Author- ship, but I act as Counsel in liti- gated cases, or where litigation is expected or threatened. I also make investigations, when a determination of the validity or scope of any existing Patent is desired, upon which to base a pur- chase of such Patent, -AND- or a decision as to whether the man- ufacture or sale of the invention described in it can be safely under- taken.

FORTY-FIRST VOLUME.
INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting this, the forty-first vol- ume of the Indianapolis City Directory, we note with pleasure the increase in population, notwithstanding the depres- sion during the last two years. The Di- rectory of 1894 contained 57,598 names; this contains 59,982 names, an increase of 2,384, which, multiplied by two and one-half, shows an increase in popula- tion of 5,960, and the total population, including the suburbs, 149,955.
The Directory, in accuracy, is as nearly perfect as the most unceasing vigilance could make it. The publica- tion of a directory for a large city like Indianapolis is a work of great difficul- ty and labor of which the public have no conception, because if they had we should suppose that many hundreds of our merchants, store keepers and others who use it a great deal during the year besides having their business represent- ed from year to year in both the alpha- betical and classified portion of the Di- rectory without any cost to them, would give up the practice of borrowing and purchase a copy for their own use. The taking of names was completed about the 1st of December, and it is hoped that anyone who has changed his busi- ness location or residence since that date whose name, business or profes- sion is not properly inserted will not censure the publishers, as communica- tions appeared in the daily papers re- questing such to send in their addresses for correction, the frequency of removals rendering it impossible for the publish- ers to make a correct directory without
such assistance. To find a name you must know how to spell it. It is not uncommon for members of the same family to spell their names differently, preserving the pronunciation-a few in- stances as follows: Baar, Bahr, Barr, Beyer; Maher, Maier, Mayer, Meier, Meyer, Mier, Myer; Schaefer, Schafer, Shafer, Shaffer. We have in our office a library containing directories of all the principal cities of the United States for the free use of our patrons and strangers visiting our city. In addition to the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable library, our "Ex- change System," which places the In- dianapolis City Directory in all directory libraries throughout the country, serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous city, for no other publication can convey such an idea of a city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions; its schools, churches, socie- ties, banks and railroads, and all the various institutions and organizations.
The wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with our citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Directory annually records. Attention is directed to the city map, corrected up to date, and street guide attached thereto indicating by letter and number where each street may easily be found.
We extend our thanks to the patrons of the Directory for their continued con- fidence and support.
