FORTY-SECOND VOLUME.

-

INTRODUCTORY.

The Forty-second Annual Volume of The Indianapolis City Directory for 1896 presented to the public with the confidence that it is equal, if not superior, to s predecessors in point of r liability and accuracy.

The territory embraced is larger than in the past, and includes West Indian- polis, Irvington, Brightwood, Mount Jackson, Mapleton and Haughville.

The alphabetical portion of the Directory, ending at page 940, shows an in- crease of eighty-two pages of names over last year.

POPULATION.

The present volume contains 67,662 names. Using 2} as a multiplier-a smaller one than that used in any other city-we have an estimated population of 169,155, an increase over 1895 of 19,200. By using the multiplier of 2}, the publishers believe a very conservative estimate of the population is obtained-an estimate which, in the past, has been borne out by the census returns. It must be remem- bered, however, that the census is necessarily confined to the city limits, while the Directory includes all the immediate suburbs, which are, practically, part of the City.

One of the best indications of the prosperity of the City is the large increase during the past year in the building line. Notably among these may be mentioned the Majestic Office Building, the Scottish Rite Temple, the Lemcke Building, the Indiana Trust Building, the Indiana Bank Building, the Blacherne and the Chalfant.

In conclusion, the publishers tender thanks to their patrons for continued support, and assure them that no effort nor expense has been spared to insure accuracy and correctness.
