COURTS.


The United States is divided into nine Judi- cial Circuits, in each of which a Circuit Court is held for each district within each circuit. The act of Congress approved April 10, 1869, provides as follows: "The Circuit Court in each district shall be held by the Justice of the Supreme Court allot- ted to the circuit, or by the Circuit Judge of the circuit, or by the District Judge of the district, sitting alone, or by the Jus- tice of the Supreme Court and Circuit Judge sitting together, in which case the Justice of the Supreme Court shall pre- side, or in the absence of either of them, by the other (who shall preside), and the District Judge." The State of Indiana comprises one Judicial District.


The courts for the district are held in Indian- apolis, New Albany, Evansville and Fort Wayne. The district is attached to the Seventh Judicial Circuit, which comprises the States of Wisconsin, Illinois and In- diana.
