FORTY-THIRD VOLUME.
1897.
INTRODUCTORY.
The publishers take pleasure in presenting to their patrons the forty-third annual volume of THE INDIANAPOLIS CITY DIRECTORY. They offer it with the as- surance that it will equal former editions in completeness and accuracy.
The territory embraced this year is the same as in the past, including, in ad- dition to the city proper, West Indianapolis, Irvington, Brightwood, Haughville, Mount Jackson, Mapleton, Woodside, Clifton-on-the-River, Marion Park and Em- erichsville.
POPULATION.
This volume contains 65,320 names. By using a multiple of 234, a population of 179,630 is shown for the territory above mentioned. This multiple is used to include males under twenty years of age and females following no employment or living at home with their parents, many of whom have been included in former editions but excluded from this. In fixing the population of the city and suburbs at 179,630 it is believed that a just and fair estimate is given, and one which is borne out by the poll at the recent election, which gave the city over 41,000 voters. This would indicate a population of over 165,000 for that portion of the territory included within the city limits and about 15,000 for the above-named suburbs.
NEW STREET GUIDE.
The street guide given in the present work is entirely new and includes all the alterations in the names of streets contained in the ordinances recently passed by the city council. In this guide we have shown under the name of the old street its new name, and in the case of two or more streets of the same name, the ward in which each is contained. And under the new name has been in - cluded the names of the old street or streets which comprise that street under the new ordinance.
RENUMBERING OF HOUSES.
The city council has now under consideration the renumbering of houses on the decimal system, 100 to the block of the usual length, a system which is in vogue in nearly all large cities, and one that for simplicity and convenience can not be excelled. The number would indicate the exact number of blocks distant from the base or dividing line of the city.
CITY MAP.
In the revised edition of the city map, also presented by the publishers with this volume, all street changes have been made to accord with the city ordinance and our street guide above mentioned. At the foot of the map is also contained a street guide locating on the map by letter and figure the names of all streets. In this guide, also, the same rule has been followed in regard to the names of the old and new streets that we followed in our street guide referred to above.
Changes found in a city directory from year to year surely indicate the life and activity of its inhabitants, and the statistics which our columns from time to time present are bases on which to estimate the city's growth and prosperity. As the city increases in population demands for more commodious offices cen- trally located increase, and as real estate in the heart of the city becomes more valuable old buildings are torn down to make place for new ones more modern in. style and more commodious in arrangement. Each of these buildings has its numerous tenants and the proportion who move yearly can only be appreciated by comparing one of our editions with its previous one. These changes make the Directory an absolute necessity in every store and business man's office.
In conclusion the publishers desire to thank their patrons for continued sup- port, and the public generally for courtesy extended to their agents in collecting the required data. Neither effort nor expense have been spared to make the work accurate and reliable.
