INTRODUCTORY. 1358775
The publishers of the Indianapolis Direc- tory present to its patrons the annual issue for the first year of the twentieth century. They and their predecessors have been doing this over forty years. In a broader sense than most will imagine, the Directory is the history of Indianapolis. If the historian had no other data he could write the commercial and industrial de- velopment of the city.
The Directory of 1901 contains 76,775 names, compared with 74,370 in 1900-a gain of 2,405-a considerable town of itself. Long experience has shown that there are 234 inhabitants to each name in the Directory. On this basis the population of the city at the beginning of the year was 211,134; a year ago it was 204,518-a gain of 6,616. The gain the year previous was 7,214 on this basis. Thus Indianapolis's gain in pop- ulation year by year exceeds the popula- tion of scores of prosperous cities in the State that resent the implication of be- ing country towns.
The United States census gives Indianap- olis a population considerably under the estimate of the Directory, nevertheless we are confident our estimate is nearer the population of the real Indianapolis to .. day than is the count of the Census Bureau. The real Indianapolis, which is part of the life of the city, is not bounded by the arbitrary lines which make the divisions and subdivisions which
constitute the incorporate city. Con- sequently our estimate covers more territory. Then there are many eling men who live more of their time ill trav- Indianapolis than elsewhere,
but are counted in the census elsewhere and hun- dreds of young men and women find em- ployment in Indianapolis who appear in the census of the places in which their parents live. All these the Directory embraces in the population of Indianapolis. Above all, the long-trained canvassers of the R. L. Polk & Co. are far better qualified to make a searching canvass than are the most in- telligent men who have had no experience in such work. For these reasons we insist that the real number of human beings con- stituting the population of the actual In- dianapolis is to-day nearer 211,000 than are the figures of the federal canvass.
-
The past year has been a most prosper- ous one for Indianapolis. Its industries have held the rapid pace set in 1898 and 1899. Idle people there have been and idle people there will always be so long as human beings fail to recognize that occu- pation is not the greatest blessing that comes to man, but the compulsory idle are few indeed. The volume of business has been large all the year. The clearing house reports show a large increase in the local volume of money over the return of 1899. While there was complaint early in the season of 1900 of contracted building op- erations, fifty-four business buildings and blocks were erected and 786 dwelling houses were added to the homes of the city. The fact that 535 of the residences added to the homes of the city the past year are classified as one-story cottages proves that home builders and owners are increasing in Indianapolis more rapidly than any other class. In the prosperous conditions of the city, none has more of hope in it than the Increase of the home owner. It is an eco-
¡ nomic fact that nothing so much contrib- utes to the public welfare, to soundl com- munities and good citizenship than home owning. Another feature of the building the past year is found in the building of twenty-nine flats, brick except six. This fea- ture of the larger cities seems to be very popular in Indianapolis.
During the year three of the interurban electric lines have been completed. One of these has brought the city into hourly connection with Anderson, Muncie and other important towns of the gas belt. Al- ready the impetus of the more frequent op- portunities to pass and repass has brought the most populous region in close connec- tion with Indianapolis. Thus the real In- dianapolis has been extended miles beyond the limits of the present Directory, making it no hazard to predict that ere long the real Directory of Indianapolis and its suburbs will include all the territory drawn to its center by the lodestone of traffic and intercourse.
The census gives Indiana a population of over 2,500,000, of which Indianapolis is the industrial, political and social center more than is the capital of any other Western State. In other words, Indianapolis is the center of a population nearly as large as that of the thirteen colonies which fringed the Atlantic coast and where our forefath- ers establish the American Repu lic. With the methods of agriculture in ve 'e in Eu-
rope, Indianapolis, long before the new century is old, may be the cente of double the present population and a city with double the present population. Such a growth would fitly follow the miracle of the Indianapolis which in three-quarters of a century has risen out of the morasses of White river.
The census of 1900 has shown that Indian- apolis has grown during the past decade more rapidly than any city of its class in the country, surpassing in population some of those which have made far great- er pretension.
With such a record as the forty-six vol- umes of the Directory which have preceded this have made of the development of a great city from ą country town, the pub- lishers, in the forty-seventh issue which they now place in the hands of its patrons, feel warranted in predicting the steady growth of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Calling attention to this volume, the publishers feel confident that the thousands who purchase it and the tens of thousands who use it will find it more complete than any of its predecessors- a more perfect measure of the commercial and industrial life of Indianapolis. It is a source of gratification to the publishers to know that the Directory is indispensable to a clientage that embraces the life and activity of the city-that it is of reál use to more thousands than any book which they open.
At the same time that the publishers feel a pardonable pride in giving the public so valuable a book, they gratefully recog- nize their increased obligation to the peo- ple of Indianapolis for their liberal patron- age and for their courtesy to those who have represented them in the preparation of the Directory.
