INTRODUCTORY. 1358777
The publishers of THE INDIANAPOLIS DIRECTORY have not, in the forty-eight annual volumes whch have preceded this, had so abundant cause to congrat- ulate their patrons. Of many remarkable years, the year 1902 has been one of the most remarkable for the extent and va- riety of the prosperity of this city. We enter upon the year 1903 with every as- surance of that continued prosperity which has been most prodigal to Indian- apolis.
The Indianapolis of the Directory ex- tends from the west line of Mt. Jackson, on the west, to the east line of Irving- ton, on the east, and from Forty-eighth street, north, to Southern avenue. The canvassers have found within that terri- tory 80,500 names. At the usual esti- mate of 234 inhabitants to each name, the population of Indianapolis was 221,- 375 the first of the year 1903. Since the making of the Directory of 1902, the beautiful suburb of Irvington has be- come a part of the city of Indianapolis. Last January the Directory population of the city was about 215,500, which makes the increase for the past year about 5,875. This may not seem a large increase in population, but in ten years it would mean about 60,000.
While all the industries of the city have been prosperous in a high degree the past year, the retail trade has in- creased in a marked manner by the ener- gizing influences of the increasing num- ber of suburban electric lines. In the last few months a combination has been made which will make Indianapolis one of the greatest centers of electric lines in the country. These lines will have an immense central station in this city, which will be the nucleus of the greater Indianapolis, to which all of the grow- ing towns and teeming industries in a
radius of an hundred miles will be trib- utaries. The tendency of such lines will not so much increase the population within the corporate lines of Indian- apolis as to bind them to Indianapolis in the closer and more potential influ- ence of trade and industry. For all of these towns and hamlets, Indianapolis will be a clearing-house of traffic and industry. The development of the free rural postal routes, now complete in Marion county, have contributed im- mensely to wipe out the lines which have separated city from country.
Just now Indianapolis is entering upon a new development. The arsenal grounds are as good as sold to a syndi- cate of influential and wealthy men liv- ing in different parts of the country, who will proceed to establish the largest school of the industrial arts that can be found in the country. Indianapolis is selected because its central location com- mends it to those who would place a technical school where it will receive a national patronage. Central location has also designated the vicinity of In- dianapolis for a military post, which will be called Benjamin Harrison. At the same time an aroused public spirit has taken in hand resolutely the con- struction of a vast coliseum for national meetings, which will cost a large amount of money.
The publishers, while thanking their patrons for past favors, take this occa- sion to say to them that they have made the Directory of 1903 every way worthy of the enterprise and growth of the city. It is in every way the completest of the forty-nine volumes issued. They desire to express their sincere appreciation for the invariable courtesy of the people of the city while prosecuting their work.
