Introductory : 1907
W E take pleasure in presenting to our patrons and the public the fifty-third annual volume of the Indianapolis City Directory. The number of names it contains is greater than in any previous issue, and shows, as the pre- vious volumes have shown, a steady and strong growth in the population of In- dianapolis. In this volume the number of names is 91,552, and, on the basis of two and one-half inhabitants to each name, we estimate the population to be 228,880, an increase in population of 6,495 during the preceding year.
At one time, not so many years ago, Indianapolis was known as a "city of homes." Then it became known more widely as a railroad center and a city of conventions. And now it is known not only as a city of homes and a railroad center and a city of conventions, but also as the heart of a big system of electric interurban lines and as a manufacturing city and as a city of great commercial activity.
It has been an active city in all ways during the past year. The city's record of building permits shows that during 1906 buildings representing a cost of $5,530,971.80 were erected in Indianapolis. Unlike former years, the rate at which the building permits were issued was steady, instead of being confined largely to the spring and summer months. A general estimate places the average number of permits issued per month at about 300.
As a convention city Indianapolis has become known in all parts of the United States. So frequent are state and national conventions that they arouse scarcely passing comment, saving the notice they receive in the daily press. It might be well to observe while on this subject that during last year the Ohio State Teachers' Asso- ciation deserted Ohio and held its convention in this city, drawn by the many attrac- tions of Indianapolis and by the opportunity to visit its far-famed public schools.
As to Indianapolis being a railroad center : The official records show that there were handled at the. Union Station during last year 60,094 trains, containing 369,604 coaches, while during 1905 the number of trains handled was 55,794, with 343,021 coaches. Official reports show further that in 1906 there were transferred over the Belt Railroad 1,193,28I cars, an increase of 88,022 cars over the number handled in any preceding year. Definite figures showing the amount of business done by all of the traction lines centering in Indianapolis can not be had, but assurance is given by the merchants that the electric lines have done much toward promoting the city's commercial activity. Extensive improvements have been made by the steam roads running into the city, and the traction lines have added materially to their mileage during the past year.
Merchants and manufacturers report much activity during 1906. The price of property in the business district has advanced materially, and some real estate dealers assign as the cause the activity in local trade. A good barometer of the activity of a city's industries consists of the postage receipts of its postoffice. The postage revenue at the Indianapolis office during last year was $940,000, the largest in the history of the office, while for the preceding year it was $851,186.37.
Much additional information in regard to the growth of Indianapolis during 1906 might be given, but space forbids. On pages 78 and 79 there may be found addi- tional information, however, in proof of the fact that Indianapolis is now greater than "no mean city."

Indianapolis is the fifth largest publishing city in America.
Indianapolis is noted for its freedom from labor strikes and disturb- ances.
One hundred and seventy-five churches, with a membership of seventy thousand.

Banking and trust company resources are approximately seventy mil- lion dollars.
All freight depots are located in the heart of the city, within a radius of four squares.
A Belt Railroad surrounds the city, expediting shipments and furnish- ing factory sites.
Indianapolis is the sixth city in the United States as a pork and beef packing house center.
Indianapolis has an area of 30.77 square miles, the elevation above sea- level varying from 714 to 832 feet.
Eight public parks within the city limits, covering 1,31I acres, and three just outside, with 310 acres.
One-fourth of the population of the United States is within a radius of three hundred miles of Indianapolis.
New two-million-dollar Post Office and Federal Building, said to be the most modern and complete in America.
Indianapolis has the largest and most imposing monument ever erected by any government in honor of its soldier dead.
One hundred and fifty-five miles of electric street railroad, under one system, at a four-cent fare, with universal transfers.

INDIANAPOLIS TO-DAY.
We have at the present time 168 miles of sewers, with sanitary condi- tions the best ; 125 miles of paved streets ; 500 miles of improved streets, and 255 miles of water mains.
Indianapolis is noted the world over for its beautifully shaded streets and comfortable homes ; second as an American city in the number of workingmen that own their homes.
There is no better labor market in the world. There are 45,500 people employed in the city by the manufacturing industries. Of this number fully 30,000 may be called skilled mechanics.
Forty-five hotels, affording accommodations to all visitors, even dur- ing the many conventions that are held here, and which are of such fre- quency as to average one for each day in the year.
Indianapolis made greater strides in a commercial way in the year 1906 than in any year of her previous history. There were sixty-three new manufacturing establishments started during the year, making a total at this time of 2,350 factories, both large and small, employing five or more persons.
Indianapolis is noted the world over as having one of the best public school systems in the world. Visitors come to our city daily to investigate its merits. We have sixty-five public schools, two high schools (one aca- demic and one manual training), four colleges and academies and one public library.
The largest industries here are engine and boiler shops, mill machinery, saw manufactories, structural iron and bridge works, foundries and ma- chine shops, buggy and automobile manufactories and packing houses. We, however, can claim that no city in the world has a larger variety of industries. A careful estimate of the value of products manufactured at Indianapolis in 1906 would be $100,000,000.
Indianapolis is within fifty miles of the most extensive coal fields in America, and is the center of the Indiana coal trade, which is daily growing into larger volume. The main offices of nearly all the Indiana coal mines are located at Indianapolis, and the contracts for the production of coal are made here. Steam coal for factory use is laid down at the plant of the consumer at about $1.25 per ton, a price which is not duplicated, quality considered, by any other city in the union of our class.
The honor of being the largest inland city in the country still rests with Indianapolis. Situated within thirty-five miles of the center of population, and possessing a most wonderful system of steam and interurban railroads, it has an unsurpassed geographical location. Forty-three steam and elec- tric roads enter our city. A total of 485 steam and electric passenger trains enter our Union Station and Traction Terminal Station daily. We are still the greatest interurban center in the world, twenty-five lines termi- nating at the magnificent Traction Terminal Building, which is the only exclusive interurban station in the world.
