FENCES FOR ALL PURPOSES

E RECEIVE many complaints from our patrons to the effect that they are bothered so much by BORROWERS. These parties are not the private citizen nor the stranger in the city, who steps in, looks at the Directory and goes out, but merchants, business and professional men, who need a Directory every day of the year, yet who are too close-fisted to buy one.

These same individuals are the ones that borrow your Directory "just fu a minute," which, in the majority of cases, means a day or perhaps a week. unless you remember that they have it and send for it.

These same borrowers will tell the Directory canvasser that he has "no use for a Directory," that he "knows everybody," and, vice versa, "everybody knows him."

The New Metzograph Screen

This new process is peculiarly fitted to the making of an artistic picture where sharpness of detail is not essential. Note the pleasing effect of the grain, and the absence of the dots and cross-lines, in the halftone below.

The Metzograph Screen is unusually valuable in color work, par- ticularly for soft tints. Over its tints the standard cross-line halftone prints without causing a "pattern." Note the red plate on the cover page and the yellow tint on page 3.

We do not recommend this screen where depth of etching is de- sired, nor for subjects necessitating vignette finish.

Commercial Possibilities of the Three-Color Halftone Process

Drawings for three-color reproduction should have strength in coloring and should be two or three times larger than the plates are to be. The above specimen shows, however, that a fairly good result can be secured from really very poor copy. These plates were made from hasty sketches in colors, the same size exactly as the cuts and com- plete sets for eighteen different subjects were made and de- livered in two weeks after receiving the order. Some of the subjects included a fourth plate-gold. The customer con- siders the job entirely satisfactory and the cost of the work was much less than it would have been if done by any other process.

The Catalog Illustration

Most lines of business hope to attract trade by the catalog from places where a salesman seldom goes. The solici- tation of mail orders is doubly effec- tive where the cut of your article is good enough to be a salesman in itself.

The Value of Good Retouching

The average man forms his first, and perhaps strongest, impression of your catalog from the cuts in it. The cut that stands forth with life-like clearness not only attracts the eye, but possesses a selling-force which cannot be over-estimated. " We are what we appear." Careful retouching adds somewhat to your en- graving bill, but it adds even more to the selling-force of your catalog, which means that it adds to your business and to your profits.

Two-Color Printing

A touch of color gives the illustration a wider appeal, and often suffices to keep your printed matter out of the waste basket. Stafford duotypes are comparatively inexpensive and are economically printed.

This process lends an unfailing charm to interior views and portraits, and gives force as well as attractiveness to mechani- cal subjects. It is successfully applied to a wide range of articles.

The above is a black and blue duotype. Other good com- binations are black and green, green and orange, yellow and blue, and black and brown.

FRENCH LICK SPRINGS HOTEL

Tells Most of the Story

This magazine advertisement was designed to emphasize sev- eral points: The spaciousness of this big, handsome hotel, its facilities for outdoor recreation, the mineral water bottled on the grounds, and the trade-mark. The wording of the advertisement has less to do because the art work paves the way. ( Such a design can give but one impression of the thing it advertises -- that PLUTO it is high-class. And a wide-spread im- pression of this sort is a dependable DOSE asset.

REASONS WHY STAFFORD SHOULD HAVE YOUR ORDER may be found on every page of this number of "THE HOUSE OF IDEAS" but a few more follow for good measure.

QUALITY-No matter how low the price, a cut is expensive unless correctly made.

The Stafford standard is high. Each cut is carefully inspected before delivery. It must be clean, clear, sharp, deeply etched, rich in contrast, mounted exactly type high, trimmed to pica standard and finished properly in every detail. When all these things have been attended to the cut is right and it won't go to the customer until IT IS right.

CAREFUL ATTENTION TO DETAILS . We assume that the cus- tomer knows what he wants and we try to give it to him. The Stafford system provides for intelligent attention to even the smallest detail. Improvement or change is often suggested but never made unless approved by the customer.

PROMPT SERVICE-A good cut is no better than a poor one if delivered too late. Producing quality quickly is one of the distinct features of our business. "Johnny on the Spot." that's what one grateful printer said about the Stafford service.

FAIR PRICES, Our customers get what they pay for, and pay for no more than they get. Accurate time is kept on all work and no element of guess "work enters into our accounting. The sixteenth year, continuously, with our splendid organization, trained and tried, in our superb plant, modern to the minute, insures the highest quality of work, the best service, at the least consistent expense. In short, Stafford prices are O. K.
