INTRODUCTORY
The history of the growth and development of Indianapolis during the last half century and more is recorded in the volumes of the Indianapolis Directory. And it is with pardonable pride that the publishers now present the Directory of 1910, for on its pages is found the gratifying story of continued advancement.
The one feature of the city's growth above others which is always of interest is the population. This volume contains 99,458 names, and as experience has shown that there are 21/2 inhabitants to each name, the present population of Indianapolis is 248,645. The significance of these figures, as marking the growth of Indianapolis, can best be appreciated by comparing with those of the Directory of 1900. In that volume there were 66,933 names, with an estimated population of 167,333, showing an increase in population during the ten years of 81,312. The Directory for 1909 con- tained 96,060 names, the estimated population being 240,150, which shows an increase in one year of 8,495.
R. L. Polk & Co. has sought to make each issue of the Indianapolis Directory more nearly a true reflection of the city's life. While the primary purpose of this volume is to present an accurate record of the names, residences and places of busi- . ness of the citizens, yet the scope has been so enlarged that the commercial, the in- dustrial, the social and the moral phases of the city's life are clearly portrayed.
In the Classified Business Directory is to be found the evidence of a well-bal- anced industrial existence. No city in the country can boast of a more varicd linc of manufactures. Many new factories were established during the last year, giving employment to thousands of skilled workmen. The lists of wholesale and jobbing houses, retail stores, financial institutions, railroads-these round out a wholesome industrial record.
The miscellaneous pages of churches and religious organizations show also an in- crease denoting the moral development of the city. During the year additional sub- libraries have been established, new school buildings erected, more musical and classi- cal schools opened, indicating the growth of the city also in matters of culture and intellectuality. It is interesting to note that more than eighty different publications are printed and distributed in and from Indianapolis. A greater number of secret and benevolent organizations is recorded than heretofore; more acres are included in public parks; the city's bounds have been extended ; the public service corporations have been required by the growth of the city to enlarge their facilities and extend their lines and pipes-all these and many other evidences of the substantial advance- ment of the city are found in this volume, and the citizenship in general is to be con- gratulated, not only upon the present progress and prosperity in evidence, but also upon the prospect for even greater civic development in the coming years.
The Indianapolis Directory has grown as Indianapolis has grown, and the pub- lishers have enjoyed a generous patronage, of which they are deeply appreciative. There is satisfaction in producing that which makes to the general benefit and con- venience of a community, and we thank the public generally for the courteous treat- ment extended our canvassers.
We print a number of extra copies of the Indianapolis City Directory for the pur- pose of exchanging with all the directory publishers of the larger citics. These books are sent at our own expense and placed in all the Directory Libraries of the country. In exchange we have on file in our Directory Library, which we maintain in our of- fice, 320-324 American Central Life Building, the directories of the leading cities of the country. This makes a very large reference library for the use of our patrons, and is a convenience that is gladly utilized by a large number. We are pleased to be able, in this way, to make an additional return for the patronage be- stowed upon the work. At the same time, we draw attention to the fact that we are giving Indianapolis widespread and effective advertising by placing so complete a mirror of our city as our Directory in a conspicuous position in all the cities of the nation.
