INTRODUCTORY
Another chapter in the growth and development of Indianapolis is here pre- sented in the form of the Indianapolis City Directory for 1913.
It is a "chapter" in name only, for, in reality, it is a volume, complete in itself, and bristling with the facts and data incident to the progress and expansion of "The Greatest Inland City."
Indianapolis has grown materially during 1912 and, in this volume, now pre- sented to the public, the full and complete details of its growth are presented.
First, and definitely, in the line of growth and development stands the city's population-upon the basis of which it takes its certain rank among the great cities of the United States.
Listed in this Directory are the names of 106,774 persons. Based upon this fig- ure, the population of Indianapolis is, at the present time, 266,935. This estimate of the total population is reached by accepting the fact that there are two and one-half inhabitants to every name listed in the Directory. This proportion, it has been demonstrated through experience, is both fair and conservative.
The population of Indianapolis, as estimated in the Directory of 1912, was 260,715.
Thus, in one year, Indianapolis has gained 6,220 in population, and is proceed- ing steadily toward the temporary goal of 300,000.
New business enterprises have come into existence during the preceding twelve months. Old and established business houses have expanded.
New business buildings, new factory buildings, new homes, new churches and new schools have risen. New people have come. Work has awaited them-and they are busy.
Commercially, the city has prospered. In all of its other phases of life it has kept pace.
And here in the Directory for 1913, in classified and convenient form, may be found the detailed record of the city's growth.
Names, addresses and occupations, both of persons and business enterprises, are carefully listed so that any one of the city's 266,935 inhabitants may be found at a glance.
These, with all other facts have been carefully gathered, compiled, arranged and classified. Every effort has been exerted to obtain accurate and complete in- formation. And, also, it has been our endeavor to present it in a way best calcu- lated to meet the satisfaction and convenience of our patrons.
In the preparation of this volume we have been materially assisted by the co- operation of the people of Indianapolis, who have cheerfully given us the neces- sary information and facts. For this assistance we offer our hearty thanks.
This company maintains, at its offices, 320-324 American Central Life Building, a Directory Library, in which may be found current copies of the directories of all the larger cities. This library is maintained for the use of our patrons and we urge them to avail themselves of this, as well as any other courtesy at our command.
