THE FIRST TEN YEARS
An account of the founding and the growth of St. John the Baptist Parish during the first decade of its history.
The pages that follow were prepared for publication by Father Ryder before his death. They are presented to you just as he left them. It is right, of course, that this record of his work among you should be dedicated to his memory and that it should serve to remind you of his years of de- voted labor in this parish and community.
HIS HOLINESS, POPE PIUS XII
T
THE MOST REV. JOHN F. NOLL, BISHOP OF FORT WAYNE
REV. S. JOACHIM RYDER First Pastor St. John the Baptist Church Ft. Wayne, Ind. Died December 24, 1941
EARLY HISTORY
The earliest recorded history of the present site of Saint John the Baptist Church and School, is embodied in a treaty made October 6, 1818, in which the United States of America agreed to grant, by Patent in fee simple, to Jean Baptiste Richardville, Principal Chief of the Miami Nation of Indians, the following tract of land: three sections of land, beginning about 25 rods below his house on the river Saint Mary near Fort Wayne; thence, at right angles with the river one mile; and from this line and the said river up the stream thereof for quantity. Two sections upon the east side of the Saint Mary's River near Fort Wayne; running east one mile with the line of the Military Reservation; thence from that line and from the river for quantity. Two sections on 27 mile creek, where the road from St. Mary's to Fort Wayne crosses it, being one section on each side of said creek. One tract of land, east of the river, was surveyed as follows: a tract containing 1091.58 acres, bounded and described as follows and sit- uated on the east side of Saint Mary's River; Beginning at a post on the east bank of the river St. Mary's (witness tree) ; thence east, 80 chains to a post (witness tree) ; thence south 183 chains and 50 links to W. Oak 16 inches in diameter on the bank of the river St. Mary's (witness tree) ; thence down the river Saint Mary's with the meanderings thereof to the place of beginning.
In the different records of conveyance in the succeeding years, we find the names of Hanna, Taber, Gehle, Bond, Fleming, McKinnie until the year of the marvelous development of Hilgeman and Schaaf and the plat- ting of the different subdivisions, with Fairmount Place and Southwood Park Addition taking a prominent place.
The formation of a new Catholic Parish found its inception in the expansion of the city and the ready acquiescence of the Right Reverend Bishop. In March 1926, lots 138 to 143 in Fairmount Place Addition were purchased. In December 1927, the adjoining lots 109 to 112 and lots 155 to 158 in Southwood Park Addition were purchased. This formed a city block, bounded on the east by Fairfield Avenue, on the south by Sherwood Terrace, on the west by Arlington Avenue, on the north by Pasadena Drive.
Realizing the need of a new parish, Bishop Noll announced the estab- lishment of new parochial territory, bounded on the north by Rudisill Boulevard, on the east by Lafayette Street, on the west by Saint Mary River, and invited the Sisters of Providence to take charge of the school. He appointed Father S. Joachim Ryder of Gary to act as the first Pastor, who arrived in Fort Wayne on August 14, 1929 and resided at Saint Vin-
cent Orphan Asylum until December 25, 1929 when he took up residence in a temporary rectory located at the northwest corner of South Wayne Avenue and Sherwood Terrace. He acted as assistant Pastor at St. Pat- rick Parish until the completion of the chapel September, 1930.
Definite plans for a new school, and chapel were set in motion by the selection of a building committee who had been recommended in a meet- ing of the men of the future parish. The selection of the name for the new parish "Saint John the Baptist" was a complimentary expression of admiration for the Right Reverend Bishop whose patron Saint is John the Baptist. Mr. Guy Mahurin was selected as architect, and Mr. Harry M. Carlson as contractor. The contract for the new building was awarded on January 23, 1930, the ground staked out on January 25th, and ground broken on January 29, 1930. The cornerstone was laid Sunday, June 1, 1930 by the Very Reverend Monsignor Thiele, Rector of St. Peter Parish in the unavoidable absence of the Right Reverend Dean, Joseph Delaney, Rector of St. Patrick Parish. The sermon was preached by Father Joseph Keating of St. Patrick Parish and the singing was rendered by the male choir of St. Peter Parish under the direction of Prof. Harry Weigand. The following members of the clergy were present: Fathers John Nadolny, secretary to His Lordship, Henry Hoerstman of St. Andrew Parish, Charles Girardot of St. Joseph Parish, John Dapp of St. Jude Parish, Alfred Reinig assistant Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Arnold Wibbert and Herman Miller assistant Pastors of St. Peter Parish, Curt Suelzer, assistant Pastor of the Cathedral. The altar was blessed privately and Holy Mass celebrated for the first time on Sunday, September 14, 1930. The chapel was solemnly blessed by His Lordship, John Francis Noll, Bishop of the Diocese, on Sunday, October 19, 1930.
FIRST LETTER OF THE PASTOR
Fort Wayne, Indiana, August 30, 1929.
Dear Parishioners :
The history of the tremendous spread of the Church is written in letters of gold, indicative of the progressive and sacrificial spirit of Catho- lic sons and daughters.
You now face the actuality of another important move in your own city of Fort Wayne. The Church goes with Her children. If they go to the utmost bounds of civilization, She pushes Her way. If you, in keeping step with the spread of the city's confines, make your way out to where living conditions are bettered, then your Church feels that She must follow. Why?
The solicitous care of Mother Church for Her children has never slackened. Your soul's salvation is infinitely more important than your business or your living conditions. The souls of your children are precious jewels entrusted to your care, jewels that are more precious than all the treasures of earth.
The Church, according to the dictates of Christ, must act as your mother and guide in all things which relate to the salvation of your soul and the souls of your children. Therefore, like a good mother, She will follow you so as to be ever near with Her administrations and guidance.
You are now residing in one of the beautiful districts of Fort Wayne. Your Catholic instinct calls for a Catholic center in that beauty spot; your civic pride calls for buildings which will be in keeping with the well- known Catholic building program, and in keeping with your surround- ings. The Church, now throws down the challenge to this generation, as She has to those wonderful generations which preceded you, asking for your sacrifices and financial gifts, so that your new parish establishment will be a matter of pride to you, to your Right Reverend Bishop, and to the city of Fort Wayne.
Beginning next week, September 1st., I shall endeavor to visit every family. In the meantime, discuss in your family circle, the amount of money that you can subscribe for this project. No definite plans have as yet been adopted. The actual establishment of this new parish, and the plans that will follow, will depend, to a great extent, upon the amount of money pledged by you in this visit.
If I fail to visit any family, it will be due to the fact that they have been missed in the census which was so kindly submitted by the Pastor of

St. Patrick Parish. If you know of any of your friends who will not have been called upon, I would appreciate receiving their names and addresses.
I am looking forward with much joy to this visitation among the new parishioners. Looking forward much farther into the future, I read the glorious history of one of the finest parishes in Fort Wayne, and see there, written in letters of gold, the splendid work and magnificent sacri- fices made and suffered by its members to continue the spread of the Church.
