INTRODUCTORY

N PRESENTING this volume of the CITY DIRECTORY, it

1 is but fitting that we should offer some remarks, regarding the

,7 same. The contents of this work are the restlts of several months of labor by experts in name taking, using every precau- tion and search to get the names, correct addresses, etc.

Allow us to make the following suggestion: First, as to the similarity of names which, in sound, are the same, but often spelled very differently. For illustration, the name Read is spelled R-e-a-d, B-e-id, R-e-e-d, R-e-e-de, R-e-i-d-c, etc. In looking for names, use judgment in the search and ascertain whether it may not be spelled differently from your idea of it, and go through the list making sure if the name you are looking for is given. We have known people looking for "Smith" throw down the book in disgust when, on inves- tigation, the name sought for proved to be S-m-y-t-h-c.

A complete directory is never the result of a single canvass, and is obtained only by a liberal expenditure of both time and money, utilizing the information obtained through previous issues and a con- tinual collection of data. Directory publishing is a vocation peculiar , to itself, and is carried on properly only by those experienced in and thoroughly conversant with its many intricate details.

In conclusion, we desire to thank our many patrons for the gen- erous support they have given us, and trust that the result of our efforts will meet with their approval and appreciation. We have used every precaution to issue a valuable and accurate work. While errors may be found, such, however, are unavoidable in a work of this kind.

Greenfield, Indiana

Greenfield, the birthplace and home of James Whitcomb Riley and the county seat of Hancock County, Indiana. is located on the National Road. in the Heart of one of the greatest farming districts of the state. Near the city flows the Brandywine in which is located the "Old Swimmin' Hole" made famous by the pen of the Hoosier Poet.

The city is casy of access in all directions; being connected with Indianapolis by two railways, and a recently constructed concrete road wide enough to accommodate the heavy traffic which moves over it. A new fifty-foot State Highway affords casy travel to the north and south.

Greenfield is a modern city in every respect. being supplied with the finest water taken from deep wells: a complete Atwerage system, electric lighting, with many ornamental stands in the business sec- tion. Natural gas is supplied to all parts of the city, and well paved streets radiate in all directions.

The Hancock County Court House is of stone construction, of a very artistic design, and beautifully decorated within. Seven churches of modern construction afford the people all the religious privileges of a much larger city. Greenfield has very fine educational facilities. Three large grade buildings, and a large, stone high-school building, all modernly equipped. give the children every educational advantage. A large gymnasium recently completed affords an opportunity for everyone to systematically develop the body.

But most of all the thing for which Greenfield is justly proud is that it is the birthplace, and home of Our Own Hoosier Poet. James Whitcomb Riley. About two squares west of the court house stands the old homestead: the place in which he was born and lived the greater part of his life. Here he wrote the poems which have had such a great influence upon the lives of girls and boys the world over. A large statue of the Poet stands in front of the court house. This was constructed through the generosity of the school children of America. Recently there has been organized in the city a large and growing Civic League. The purpose of this organization is to develop all the many sides of civic life, and to make Greenfield a Bigger, Bet- ter, and Busier place in which to live. At present a movement is being promoted by the League to construct a large Riley Memorial Park along the Brandywine. It is expected that within a short time the many tourists from over the country, as they pass through our beautiful little city, will have an opportunity to dive off into the famous Okt Swimmin' Hole.
